  • Introduction

  • Welcome to the Defensive Driver Training Module. This training is designed to ensure the safety of all employees who operate company vehicles in the state of Colorado. Defensive driving techniques will help you anticipate potential hazards, make informed decisions, and minimize risks on the road.

    Objectives:

    • Understand defensive driving principles.
    • Learn how to anticipate and react to road hazards.
    • Review Colorado traffic laws and company policies.
    • Enhance awareness and safe driving habits.
  • Section 1: Defensive Driving Fundamentals

  • What is Defensive Driving?
    Defensive driving is the practice of using safe driving strategies that enable drivers to address hazards in a predictable and controlled manner.

    Key Principles:

    • Stay alert and avoid distractions.
    • Maintain a safe following distance.
    • Adjust driving for road, traffic, and weather conditions.
    • Expect the unexpected from other drivers.
    • Follow all traffic laws and company vehicle policies.

    Situational Awareness

    • Always scan 12-15 seconds ahead for potential hazards.
    • Check mirrors and blind spots frequently.
    • Be aware of surrounding vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles.

    Safe Following Distance

    • Maintain a minimum 3-second following distance under normal conditions.
    • Increase to 5-6 seconds in poor weather or heavy traffic.
    • Adjust for large trucks or motorcycles that may stop suddenly.

       
  • Section 2: Colorado Driving Laws & Regulations

  • Speed Limits & Right of Way

    • Obey posted speed limits at all times.
    • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.
    • Give right-of-way to emergency vehicles and school buses.

    Weather Considerations

    • Colorado and many northern state laws requires drivers to have proper traction devices (chains or snow tires) during snow emergencies.
    • Reduce speed in fog, rain, or snow.
    • Increase stopping distance and avoid sudden braking on icy roads.

    DUI & Drug Impairment Laws

    • The legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit in Colorado is 0.08%.
    • A DUI can result in termination of employment and legal penalties.
    • Marijuana use, while legal, impairs driving and is subject to DUI laws.
  • Section 3: Safe Driving Practices

  • Avoiding Distractions

    • No texting or handheld phone use while driving.
    • Use hands-free devices if necessary.
    • Avoid adjusting GPS, eating, or other distractions while driving.

    Handling Aggressive Drivers

    • Do not engage in road rage behaviors.
    • Stay calm and avoid making eye contact.
    • If followed by an aggressive driver, go to a safe, public location and call the police if necessary.

    Nighttime & Rural Driving

    • Use high beams on rural roads but switch to low beams when approaching another vehicle.
    • Watch for wildlife crossing, especially in wooded or mountainous areas.
    • Reduce speed on winding roads and in areas with limited visibility.
  • Section 4: Accident Response & Reporting

  • What to Do in an Accident

    • Check for injuries – Call 911 if needed.
    • Move to a safe location if possible.
    • Exchange information with other drivers.
    • Take photos of the accident scene.
    • Notify your supervisor and company safety officer immediately.

    Breakdown & Emergency Procedures

    • Pull over to a safe location away from traffic.
    • Turn on hazard lights and stay inside the vehicle if on a highway.
    • Call for roadside assistance or company support.
  • Section 5: Company Vehicle Policies

  • Pre-Trip Inspection

    • Check tires, brakes, and lights before driving.
    • Ensure seatbelts are functional and worn at all times.
    • Report any mechanical issues to the company immediately.

    Prohibited Conduct

    • No unauthorized passengers or use of company vehicles.
    • No alcohol, drugs, or smoking in company vehicles.
    • No reckless driving or excessive speeding.
