IDO is a nonprofit World Dance and Dancesport Federation with over 90 members and contact nations, representing more than 500,000 dancers from all 6 continents! Team Canada Dance / IDO Canada is Canada’s National Member Organization
Team Canada Dance is a nonprofit organization that brings together Canada’s most elite dancers and choreographers to compete on the world stage, proudly representing Canada. Our organization allows dancers to travel, meet other dancers worldwide, and compete as a unified team with dancers across Canada. Team Canada Dance also allows Canadian dancers to learn from master teachers and choreographers both within Canada and abroad. We encourage our dancers and their supporters to foster good sportsmanship and to promote Canadian values while exhibiting our remarkable dance training. We only work with the ‘best of the best’ choreographers who choose the best dancers to represent Canada.
Each year, organizers from IDO National Member Organizations bid to host the next World Championship. Sometimes we compete in the same country consecutive years, sometimes a new host country wins their bid. Please remember that IDO is a non-profit and so information is not always available a year in advance as host organizers must negotiate with venues and hotels and consider their costs carefully. We always pass the information to our dancers when available. We do not have all the bidding information for 2025 as of yet, especially with some of the newer championships, nor will we have FINAL costs until closer to end of spring/start of summer, but we estimate our costs quite closely to final costs.
Team Canada Dance/IDO Canada has proven itself a worthy competitor at these events as an influencer and role model in the IDO community. Reaching the podium is an amazing way to celebrate all the hard work that everyone has put into the team, but dancers have also made great connections with each other and in the dance community. Past dancers have taught at international workshops and become adjudicators and choreographers themselves. Tap was our foundational Team Canada Dance team, and we went to Riesa for Tap in 1995 under the direction of Matthew Clark. With only 18 dancers from across Canada, we quickly made our mark at that first competition as a ‘team to beat’ - our choreography is considered original, and our dancers talented! Since then, our Canadians have impressed in Hip Hop, Popping, Breaking, Street Show, Show Dance, Ballet, Acro, Jazz, Modern/Contemporary, Disco, Ballroom, and more!
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VS WORLD CUP
The IDO World Championships are considered the Olympics of Dance. Dancers must qualify to participate and only the TOP 3 entries from each nation may compete. IDO uses a minimum of 5-7 adjudicators for each round, all of which passed a competency exam and are known experts in their field with experience to show. These are not the 'all discipline' adjudicators that are found in our regular national competitions. The World Championships compete in exciting elimination rounds, finishing the award ceremony with the national anthem of the winning country. It really is a special moment for everyone!
The World Championships are meant for the serious dancer who wants real competition. This will make you a better dancer by pushing yourself to be your best against the best from around the world.
World Cups are for profit all-genre competitions that accept any number of dancers. Their mission is profit and allow all dancers a chance to participate. These tend to be a more relaxed competition and more suited to dancers interested a vacation competition.
