  • The Morehouse Triangle Alumni Association (MTAA) is proud to announce our inaugural collegiate scholarship for current men of Morehouse. This scholarship is named after alumnus, Joseph M. Sansom '65. Brother Joseph affectionally known as "Joe".

    The Joseph M. Sansom '65 Distinguished Scholarship honors Joseph Merrick Sansom, a 1965 Morehouse College graduate and community leader from Durham, North Carolina. A former Deputy State Treasurer and the first African American on the RDU Airport Authority Board. Mr. Sansom’s career at IBM and his contributions to economic development in Southeast Raleigh exemplify his dedication to education, leadership, and service. His legacy of mentorship and community involvement, including the development of Southgate and Cross Link Shopping Centers, continues to inspire future generations.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • The applicant must be a current student at Morehouse College in good standing at the College.
    • The applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    • The applicant must showcase exceptional leadership both in and outside the classroom 
    • The applicant must be a permanent resident of North Carolina.
    • Please note:
      •  If you reside west of the Triangle beyond an hour (e.g., past Greensboro) or in the Charlotte area, you are ineligible to apply. 
      • Graduating seniors (those expected to graduate college in Spring 2025 or Summer 2025) and anyone currently pursuing a graduate degree or post baccalaureate studies are NOT eligible to apply.

    Requirements for Application Submission

    The applicant must complete and submit a full application packet by the provided extended deadline of Sunday, April 27, 2025 by 11:59 pm deadline, which includes the following:

    • Completion of the online Scholarship Application in its entirety.
    • Official Undergraduate Transcript with the school's official seal. Physcial transcripts should be submitted by the registrar's office or Clearing House, and mailed to the P.O. Box indicated below.
    • Two signed letters of recommendation from (1) an academic letter from a faculty member (on letterhead) and (2) a community service representatitive or community leader. Each letter must be addressed to the Morehouse Triangle Alumni Association & upload it to the application. It must be in PDF ONLY.
    • An essay of 250-500 words on TWO of the four topics below typed in 12-point font, double-spaced, and Times New Roman:
      • 1. "What an HBCU Education Means to Me". Reflect on the significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the Black community. Discuss why attending an HBCU is important to you, how it aligns with your personal goals, and how you envision it empowering you to make a difference in your family, community, and future career.
        2."Lessons from My Father or a Father Figure" Reflect on how a father, father figure, or male role model has influenced your values, aspirations, or outlook on life as you prepare for the next chapter.
        3. "The Morehouse Mystique" is often described as an intangible, yet transformative essence that defines the Morehouse experience. Reflect on what the Morehouse Mystique means to you. How has it shaped your identity, aspirations, and sense of purpose as a man of Morehouse College?4. "Brotherhood is more than just camaraderie; it is a deep bond built on shared values, trust, and a commitment to uplifting one another." What does brotherhood mean to you, and how have you fostered it in your personal life? Reflect on your experiences at Morehouse College and how its culture, traditions, and mission have shaped your understanding of brotherhood. Discuss specific ways you have contributed to building and strengthening that bond within the Morehouse community and beyond.

    Award Selection Process:

    The number of scholarships awarded and the amounts may vary based on the applicant pool and available funding. The Scholarship Committee will thoroughly review all application packets to select recipients.

    Recipients will be notified at least 3 weeks in advance if they were selected. However, the amount will be announced during the Father’s Day Scholarship Brunch, held on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

    As part of your scholarship application for the Morehouse Triangle Alumni Association, you are required to submit a thoughtful and well-organized essay. This essay is an opportunity to showcase your critical thinking skills, personal experiences, and aspirations as they relate to the topic below.  

    Your essay will be evaluated based on:

    • Clarity of thought and originality
    • Relevance to the topic
    • Grammar, spelling, and punctuation
    • Cohesiveness and organization
    • 12-point font, double-spaced, and Times New Roman.
