    This is an opportunity to show case your skills, but also provide a way to give back to our fellow cowboys and cowgirls when they need it the most.

    Check in September 17th @ 8 am

     competition starts @ 9 am

    September 18th @ 9am

    September 19th @ 8:00 am

     

    Colts will be provided for the competition, you will not bring your own.

  • You will be notifiied June 5th or June 6th, if you are accepted to compete this year! You will have 48 hrs to accept the postition or withdraw and the offer will go to the next candidate. 

     

    Total Entry Fee is- $500

    NonRefundable Deposit- $250

    Deposits is due June 12th 2026

     

    Youth Entry Fee- TBD 

     

    You do not have to pay a deposit unless you application has been accepted to be a competitor. 

     

    After you have been accepted for a spot to compete, the next steps will be:

    Within 7 days of your application being accepted please send the information needed below and payment is due or you have possibililty of losing your spot in competition for the year. 

     

     

    We will send an invoice to your email or text message

    • Payment can be made by card, venmo or make checks payable to Teton Horse Experience.
    • Deposits and entry fees are are non refundable. This means even if you withdraw due to sickness, illness, injury, weather, jury duty calls and etc.... it is nonrefundable.
    • Please email a picture of trainer with face easily seen, and one or two of working with a colt,to be featured on Teton Horse Experience Facebook page and for marketing. 
    • If you dont have any pictures, please make arrangements to get some taken and prepared for if you are chosen you can meet the deadline for all informations due on June 12th 2026
    • If you have any video of you training colts that you would like for us to use for marketing please send them over to us via google drive.

    Colts will be ranch bred or reining bred colts

    They will be 2 yr olds or 3 yr olds

    They are catchable but not considered halter broke

    Open- 6 available spots to compete

    For anyone who is 20 years of age and older

    Has experience in training colts

    Has ever taken payment for training colts

      

    Youth- 2 -3  available spots to compete

    13- 18 years of age of older 

    Must have 18 or older pen wrangler 

    Parent or guardian must be on site while competing

  • Are you willing to do right by your colt and the horse industry by stopping at the colts limit, regardless of the outcome? Even if it means no points and losing the competition?*
  • When you compete, are you a team player, supportive of other competitors, willing to help others if needed or asked?*

    Registration 

    If you have a remaining balance it will be due before you compete.We will send an invoice to your email a week before competition. You can pay the invoice before arriving or you can pay when you check in.

    When you check in, you and your pen wrangler will get a badge on a lanyard. This is your access to get in and out of the arena and behind the scenes. You will not be able to get into the arena, if you dont have your badge. 

    You will get a copy of the scorecards and rules at check in. 

    Please give yourself time to get balance paid, registered and to judges meeting. 

    After getting checked in, you are allowed to go walk thru colts and see which ones you would like on your list of choices. 

     

    Meeting:  Judges meeting is mandatory for trainers, pen wranglers, judges-

    Judges meeting is when you will ask any questions you might have about scorecards, tack or tool inspection to see how judges feel about certain tools being used. 

     

    At Judges meeting contestants will draw a number, then pick their Colt at meeting (in order of number drawn)

     

     If havent already you will be able to bring all your tools and equipment and set it in the competitors designated areas for the competition. 

    When judges, competitiors and everyone is ready the competition will begin. 

    Score cards will not be able to look at until the end of the competition. However we will each by noon the next day,  have the points for each competitior to view at the check in table. 


    Colt Starting Competition is Thursday, Friday and Saturday


    Thursday September  17th- 9 am ( check in at 8 am)
    Friday September 18th: Start time 10am, end about 5pm
    Saturday September 19th: 8 am, end about 7pm


    Liquid Zesterra (reduces acid in the stomach) will be available for purchase at trainer or owners expense. It is $3.75 you can buy the dose at check in table. Only trainer may administer the liquid zesterra. 

    • Day one Session 1 you will get 60 minutes then the colt will take a break and session 2 you will get 40 minutes in the round pen with your colt. ( you dont have to use the entire amount of time if you choose not to) 
    • Day two Session 3 you will get 60 minutes and Session 4 you will 40 minutes with your colt in the round pen. You do not have to use the full time if you choose not to in any session. 
    • Day 3 Session 5 you will get 65 minutes with your colt. 
    • Final Round will begin after everyone has completed Session 5
    • When it is your turn you will have 15 minutes to take your colt thru as many obstacles as you can and a chance for any creative freestyle of your choice.
    • Youth will have 10 minutes but only 2 to 4 obstacles to get thru. 
    • You can do the final round in hand or under saddle whatever you feel your horse is ready for. You do get awarded more points for being under saddle
    • During the final round with obstacles, you have the option to have a song of your choice playing in the background and you will have a wireless mic so you can talk to the audience during final round.
    •  No abuse of horse (judge’s and staff from Teton Horse Experience discretion)
    • Option of having trained equine (saddle horse) in round pen with colt during round pen sessions
    •  One human helper (18 years and older) with or without saddle horse may be permitted in the

            round pen with trainer, trainer will be the only one to ride their assigned

            horse. Pen Wrangler may assist in lunging or ponying colt, not permitted to tack or

            ride colt (unless discussed prior to event)

    • One mandatory 5 minute break per round pen session - may take more

            but not less. 10 point reduction in score if ignored.

    •  Only snaffle, bosal, side pull or halter for riding. No shank bit or

             mechanical hackamore allowed

    •  TOOLS: saddle, halter, rope, bridle, spurs, crop, lunge whip, flag stick,

             surcingle, lunge lines, side reins, saddle pad, desensitizing devices,

    • Obstacles needed for prep work and tools are brought by the trainer.
    •  Trainers may not leave their colt during competition to retrieve other tools 
    • If trainer decides the horse is done for the day (mentally or physically “done”) points will not be deducted for trainer’s discretion for the welfare of the horse.
    • The allotted time for each day does NOT have to be used for its entirety. But anything you are NOT able to get finished on the scorecard will NOT have a score. Please use trainers intuition and don't push the colt past the threshold.
    •  
    • Round 1 Score Card for walk, trot, lope, stop, back up may be done from the ground or under saddle. More points are given if for being under saddle versus from the ground.
    • Trainers will “declare” when they wish to be judged for specifics if necessary (example - “Picking up hooves” when they feel horse is ready for judging


    *All tools, equipment and training practices are subject to approval by Judges or Colt Starting Competition Directors. Judges or directors reserve the right to “call out” excessive, or inappropriate use of tools, equipment, or training practices. Penalties/disqualification are judges discretion. Trainers agree to comply with all rules and decisions made by signing the entry form. Trainers must be 16 yrs or older. If under 18, parent must be on site the whole time the minor is working with colt. 

  • Waiver

    For and in consideration of Teton Horse Experience, and Madison County Fairgrounds and Arena,for allowing me, the undersigned, to participate in any capacity (including as a colt starting competitor, rider, driver, handler, longeur, lessee, owner, agent, coach, official, trainer, staff, independent contractor, vendor or volunteer, spectator, speaker, demonstrator, announcer, flag presentation, emts, clinicians, and anyone participating or spectating) at the East Idaho Colt Starting Competition, including but not limited to colt starting competition,  equestrian clinics, practices, shows,warm ups and related or incidental activities,working the event, spectating or being an audience member and parking.


     I, for myself, and on behalf of my spouse, children, heirs and next of kin, and any legal and personal representatives, executors, administrators, successors, and assigns, hereby agree to and make the following contractual representations pursuant to this Agreement (the “Agreement”):

     

     ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF RISK: I knowingly, willingly, and voluntarily acknowledge the inherent risks associated with the sport of equestrian and know that horseback riding and related equestrian activities, including being a spectators around Equine, Mules and Ponies are inherently dangerous, and that participation in any Teton Horse Experience Event involves risks and dangers including, without limitation, the potential for serious bodily injury (including broken bones, head or neck injuries), sickness and disease (including communicable diseases), trauma, pain & suffering, permanent disability, paralysis and death; loss of or damage to personal property (including my horse(s), personal property & equipment) arising out of the unpredictable behavior of horses; exposure to extreme conditions and circumstances; accidents involving other participants, event staff, volunteers or spectators; contact or collision with other participants and horses, natural or manmade objects; adverse weather conditions; facilities issues and premises conditions; failure of protective equipment (including helmets); inadequate safety measures; participants of varying skill levels; situations beyond the immediate control of the Teton Horse Experience Event organizers, staff, independent contractors and volunteers ; and other undefined, not readily foreseeable and presently unknown risks and dangers.

     

    ASSUMPTION OF RISK: I understand that the aforementioned Risks may be caused in whole or in part or result directly or indirectly from the negligence of my own actions or inactions, the actions or inactions of others participating in the at Teton Horse Experience, or the negligent acts or omissions of the Released Parties defined below, and I hereby voluntarily and knowingly assume all such Risks and responsibility for any damages, liabilities, losses, or expenses that I incur as a result of my presence at Teton Horse Experience. I also agree to be responsible for any injury or damage caused by me, my horse, my employees or contractors under my direction and control at Teton Horse Experience


     WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY, HOLD HARMLESS AND INDEMNITY: In conjunction with my participation in any Teton Horse Experience, I hereby release, waive and covenant not to sue, and further agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the following parties: Teton Horse Experience, Staff and Volunteers, Contractors Wind River Arena, Clinicians, Speakers, Equine Professional and Event participants (including athletes/riders, coaches, trainers, judges/officials, and other personnel), the Event owner, licensee, and managers; the promoters, sponsors, or advertisers of any Teton Horse Experience; any charity, nonprofit or other beneficiary which may benefit from the Teton Horse Experience; the owners, managers, or lessors of any facilities or premises where a Teton Horse Experience may be held; and all directors, officers, employees, agents, contractors, and volunteers of any of the aforementioned parties (Individually and Collectively, the “Released Parties” or “Event Organizers”), with respect to any liability, claim(s), demand(s), cause(s) of action, damage(s), loss, or expense (including court costs and reasonable attorney fees) of any kind or nature (“Liability”) which may arise out of, result from, or relate in any way to my participation in the Teton Horse Experience, including claims for Liability caused in whole or in part by the negligent acts or omissions of the Released Parties


    COMPLETE AGREEMENT AND SEVERABILITY CLAUSE: This Agreement represents the complete understanding between the parties regarding these issues and no oral representations, statements or inducements have been made apart from this Agreement. If any provision of this Agreement is held to be unlawful, void, or for any reason unenforceable, then that provision shall be deemed severable from this Agreement and shall not affect the validity and enforceability of any remaining provisions


    I HAVE CAREFULLY READ THIS DOCUMENT IN ITS ENTIRETY, UNDERSTAND ALL OF ITS TERMS AND CONDITIONS, AND KNOW IT CONTAINS AN ASSUMPTION OF RISK, RELEASE AND WAIVER FROM LIABILITY, AS WELL AS A HOLD HARMLESS AND INDEMNIFICATION OBLIGATIONS. 


    By signing below, that I have read, understand, and agree to be bound by all applicable  Bylaws, rules, and policies. If, despite this Agreement, I, or anyone on my behalf or the minor’s behalf, makes a claim for Liability against any of the Released Parties, I will indemnify, defend and hold harmless each of the Released Parties from any such Liabilities as the result of such claim


    The parties agree that this agreement may be electronically signed. The parties agree that the electronic signatures appearing on this agreement are the same as handwritten signatures for the purposes of validity, enforceability, and admissibility.
