INITIAL ENQUIRY FORM
This form is for people facing a crisis or health problem who need care for their pets, including foster care, in-home feeding, and dog walking.
The form may be completed by a social worker. It is for people who have no family or friends or other means to secure care for their pets.
Note: we are unable to assist with homeless / accommodation issues / incarceration or long term foster requests.
Paws and Recover is based in Sydney but we try to help Australia-wide, depending on our ability to find suitable volunteers in the area.
---
Please note we are a volunteer not for profit organisation working fulltime in jobs not related to Paws and Recover. Our volunteers respond to these requests when they are available, usually after hours. We are typically not able to accept long-term cases and encourage those with long-term need to search for other avenues apart from Paws and Recover.
Please note the criteria below:
- The owner is experiencing a crisis such as illness, hospitalisation
- Care is to be short term: Initially one month maximum. Our committee will assess any extension request, up to three months in total (unless otherwise agreed).
- A dog is not a declared dangerous or nuisance dog
- A cat or dog is desexed and microchipped
- If the animal is not desexed or microchipped, it will be desexed and microchipped at owners own cost with an upfront payment of at least 50%
- You need to include what avenues you have taken to find care before coming to Paws and Recover.
Please complete the below form. This enables us to have the information we need to put up a post to find help. We place animals into homes for foster care and do not operate out of any premises, so it may take us between a day or up to a week to find a suitable foster carer. We cannot guarantee finding a foster carer for your pets, so you do need to keep looking for other solutions for your pets’ care.
For any hospital or medical admissions, we now need verification; proof of hospital admission such as a hospital / ward and bed number on the application if you are already in hospital or paperwork with an admission scheduled date. For refuge or rehab applications, we need a social worker to verify that they are assisting the owner. This is mandatory because of previous abuse of our services, and is an entry requirement if we are to proceed to the foster stage.
Due to not having premises and overwhelming demand, if you are experiencing homelessness or accommodation issues related to domestic violence, we are unlikely to be able to help so we advise you seek other charitable agencies or solutions. We are short term only and homelessness is usually a longer-term situation, so we are very regretful that we are unable to assist in these circumstances as we do not have the resources.
We will be the point of contact and assess foster offers for suitability. Please be honest in answers so we do not place barking dogs and/or not toilet trained dogs in apartment units. All cats will be fostered in an indoor only foster care for the safety of your cat.
We ask that you send a photo or two of each animal through to info@pawsandrecover.com with the pet’s name in the subject line. We find we get a better response when photos are used. People will identify with a photo and share to others and also breed specific foster carers will apply. Please put your pet's name in the email subject line. Once a foster carer is found, you will sign a contract for the period of foster care and the foster carer will also sign a contract stating the pet will be returned when we ask.
Older animals will be vet checked, as often they will need a dental. Tooth decay is extremely painful and will be treated at the owner’s expense (can be paid off in instalments if necessary).
FEES
Foster Care: We charge a nominal boarding fee of $20 per day for a single animal (rates vary for multiple animals). This will be reduced to $10 a day on presentation of pension or welfare card, or documented proof of financial hardship.
Flea/tick treatment must be provided or will be charged at $18 per month. If transport is required over 10 km radius this will be a $10 charge, this is applicable also for vet visits.
Feeding at home premises: Food must be provided, and the service will be $15 per day or $10 per day for pensioners / welfare recipients. Cats will only be fed for 2 weeks, after that time they must be moved to foster care as it is too isolating for them otherwise. Dogs will only be fed as a temporary emergency as they need to be walked and are not suitable to just feeding at home.
Dog Walking: We do not charge for this service, but the need must be short-term and the service is offered only to those who do not have the financial means to use paid services.
Please read terms and conditions for other requirements. Please note all contact is to Paws and Recover and owners and foster carers will not receive each other’s details, nor are able to visit pets while in care. We will pass on updates to owners.
