The Sneath family has been an integral part of the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Northern Alberta (SBHANA) since Kailyn was born in 1997.
Kailyn attended many SBHANA events throughout her life, and her family’s involvement grew alongside her participation. Her mother, Monica Sneath, became deeply engaged with the organization, serving for many years as Vice President of the Board of Directors. In this role, she played a key part in planning events and leading fundraising initiatives. Kailyn’s father, siblings and aunts were also actively involved. As a family, the Sneaths volunteered countless hours supporting SBHANA events, including summer barbecues, Christmas parties, two National Conferences and other community gatherings. They also contributed significantly to fundraising efforts through initiatives such as the Hope Classic, raffles, silent auctions, casinos, and smokie sales.
In 2000, Monica Sneath, along with her close friend Darlene Cathcart, co-founded Camp Freedom—a four-day summer camp for teens living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Kailyn was a major inspiration behind the creation of Camp Freedom. She loved to laugh, have fun, and spend time with her many friends. Humour was central to Kailyn’s personality; she delighted in telling jokes, making others laugh, and sharing her bright smile. She was known for her kindness, empathy, and inner strength, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Due to Kailyn’s complex medical needs, she required 24-hour nursing care. Monica, together with a carefully selected team, provided this support through Self-Managed Care. This approach allowed the family to hire nurses and nursing students directly, ensuring not only that Kailyn’s medical needs were met, but that she could also fully participate in her community. These caregivers became more than healthcare providers; through strong relationships built on trust and compassion, many became close friends and valued members of the Sneath family.
In recognition of the vital role nurses played in Kailyn’s life, the SBHANA and the Sneath family are honoured to establish the Kailyn Sneath Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship celebrates the dedication, compassion, and commitment of nurses who support individuals living with disabilities.
