    Enjoy a light breakfast and socializing followed by a “Purim Yom Iyun,” an exploration of the holiday of Purim through a range of intriguing classes.

     

    9:15-9:30am – Breakfast and Socializing

    Class 1: 9:30-10:15am - Playing with Pshat on Purim: Reexamining the Megillah's Midrashim, with Ora Weinbach

    Do you think you know the Purim story? Think again! More than almost any other Biblical tale, our contemporary conception of Megillat Esther is totally enmeshed with its Rabbinic retelling. We will study a few key moments from the Megillah, disambiguating pshat from midrash and discussing why those differences matter. 

     

    Class 2: 10:25-11:10am - A Nod to Charvona: The Honorable Mention Award, with Rabbi Dr. Yehuda Oratz   

    Who is the mysterious Charvona, that appears in the Megillla? Why is he mentioned for the good? Discover how a minor character plays a major role in the story and what that means for us today.

     

    Class 3: 11:15am-12:00pm – Purim on a Frenzied Friday, with Rabbi Jason Goldstein

    Have you heard of Pores Mapa U’Mekadesh? In this class, we will discuss the singular practice of transitioning the festive Purim seudah into a dignified Shabbat dinner. We will delve into the origins of this practice and uncover the deeper significance of shifting from the unbridled joy of Purim to the sanctity of Shabbat.
