    Indigenous Entrepreneur in Residence

    Ethnobotanist

    Senaqwila Wyss is Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), Tsimshian, Sto:lo, Hawaiian and Swiss. She was raised learning ancestral teachings from her mother Cease Wyss. With her mother she runs rhtea.co, an Indigenous teas company. Senaqwila is experienced in event planning and programming, as well as in education. Join us for a walk around KPU Surrey to learn about the teachings of plants and Indigenous plant medicines.

    Elder Lekeyten *session full, waitlist only*

    Lekeyten has been the Elder in Residence at KPU since 2015. He is a qw̓ ɑ:nƛ̓ ə̓ n̓ (Kwantlen) First Nation Elder, and gifted the name ‘Kwantlen’ to our university. Lekeyten has spent a lifetime in nature and is regular speaker at events at KPU and elsewhere. Come join us as we explore the trees and natural spaces at KPU Surrey with Elder Lekeyten. He will speak to Indigenous Perspectives in Biology, and share other stories and wisdom.

    Jared Qwustenuxun Williams

    Indigenous Foods Educator, Writer & Consultant

    Hul’q’umi’num Language Vlogger

    Jared Qwustenuxun Williams is a passionate traditional foods chef who works with Elders and knowledge holders to keep traditional food practices alive. Jared spent much of his youth with his late grandmother, immersed in Salish culture. Raised in a world filled with smoke and fish Jared became familiar with many of the cooking methods and techniques used by his ancestors.

    Robert Jago (Kwantlen and Nooksack)

    Indigenous Journalist/Writer in Residence

    Robert Jago has written for The Guardian, Globe and Mail, The Walrus, and many other publications. He is actively involved in governance reform for Kwantlen First Nation, and helps aspiring entrepreneurs in the downtown eastside create microbusinesses. Robert also has his own business which provides information on Indigenous communities to journalists and others looking to work with First Nations. He recently hosted the podcast series Pretendians. Join us for a discussion of the concepts of culture, the importance of doing your own decolonization work, and Robert will also speak to his article in The Walrus, “Hungry People”, focusing on the unrecognized innovations of Stó:lō First Nations in relation to fishing.
