Before we begin this form, I'd like to help you understand what it takes to host a show:
Unlike traditional music venues, house concerts offer an intimate, personal experience that cuts through the noise of commercial music marketing.
It's a grassroots approach that brings people together and directly supports emerging artists. For musicians, house concerts are a breath of fresh air. They eliminate the financial stress of venue rentals, ticket sales, and marketing expenses.
Instead, hosts create a welcoming space where artists can connect directly with an audience who is genuinely interested in discovering new music. These shows often bring together people of different ages and backgrounds, creating a unique, inclusive environment that traditional music venues rarely achieve.
Imagine transforming your living room into a cozy concert space where musicians can share their art without the barriers of commercial music industry pressures. It's not just about the music—it's about creating meaningful connections, supporting independent artists, and building a vibrant local music community. Never hosted before? Here are some frequently known protocols you should know:
- Usually musicians bring their own gear, so you don't need to worry about having a PA or microphones, just a somewhat amenable space!
- Often house shows are a great vehicle for a potluck of some sort, or even to bring people together to advocate for a certain social cause or later community event.
- Advertising is collaborative! Often the musician will provide the poster, but the house show host draws from their community of friends + neighbors in order to make it happen.
- House shows are most often donation based, asking for ~$15-40 dollars
In regards to hosting musicians for the night: For artists/bands in their first several years of touring, airbnb's or hotels (even motels) can be an insurmountable cost
The average. of cost of a one night room rate + the truck towing vehicle fuel price to each destination is about $180-$250 with a 2,000 lb sauna + 61 key upright piano in tow.
Hosts who have extra rooms that they may offer to musicians traveling through are the lifeblood of making it all work. Often, a couch, or a few couches, can work just fine...In my case, I'll be towing a sauna, so if there is no place to stay in your home, if you can leave me the courtesy of staying on the driveway and offering me your restroom, I can easily manage. I'm here for the journey and human connection.
Thank you for letting me into your home to share my gifts of sauna and songs.
