    911 Dispatcher - Job Description
  • SUMMARY:
    Responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services utilizing effective communication skills; identifies, dispatches and maintains radio contact with appropriate public safety units; operate 911 communication center specific computer equipment and software daily; function as a successful part of a team but is able to well work alone; complies with Alcona County Central Dispatch policies and procedures to ensure the safety of all public safety responders and the public.

    • Capable of maintaining professional composure in extremely stressful situations

    • Willingness to work any shift (24/7-12hour shifts) including weekends and holidays

  • FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

    • Potential candidates must pass a background check, drug screen and interview before being considered for the position.
    • Starting pay is $19.00 an hour
    • This position is part-time and does not include benefits such as insurance or retirement.
    • If hired, there is an estimated 3-month training period where the employee with work with our trainer, usually during normal business hours, for approximately 24 hours a week.
    • The part-time employee will be filling in prescheduled shifts for full-time employees, therefore they should be able to work any shift or day of the week (including weekends and possibly holidays).
    • This is not an "on call" position. Shifts are scheduled with advanced notice.
  • PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

    The primary functions listed are the major duties and requirements of a 911 Dispatcher at Alcona County Central Dispatch (ACCD) but should not be considered all-inclusive. Employees may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

    • ACCD is a 24/7/365 911 communications center that works 12-hour shifts on a 2-week rotating day off basis. Employees should be able to work any shift and day off rotation as assigned to them based on seniority as well as overtime shifts during any time other than their regularly scheduled work assignment, holidays and weekends.
    • Provides public safety dispatch services for emergency and non-emergency purposes for various agencies; keeps track of a wide variety of public safety responders, resources, personnel and incidents.
    • Receives, screens, and takes appropriate action on all emergency service calls that include 911 calls from the public requesting law enforcement, fire and EMS; determines nature and location of emergency, dispatches emergency responders/units as necessary in accordance with established
      department policies and procedures; relays pertinent information to emergency responders. 
    • Provides information, instructions and assistance to the public within scope of authority; provides detailed call information to first responders as needed; maintains status and awareness of unit locations; monitors radio traffic and relays information as required to appropriate agencies, departments and staff.
    • Enters and updates emergency assistance call for service information into the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) computer; maintains records and files in accordance with established standards and policies.
    • Maintains sufficient geographical knowledge of Alcona County including, but not limited to, roads, trails, points of interest, public buildings, local businesses, township boundaries, fire and EMS jurisdictions and neighboring counties.
    • Inputs, modifies, confirms and validates information into the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) computer system, adhering to NCIC and CJIS administrative and security requirements, system sanctions, criminal history dissemination, etc., as required.
    • Participates in specific training, projects or programs related to ACCD such as, but not limited to, monthly Police Legal Science (PLS) training, LEIN certifications, state of Michigan required 911 Dispatcher training courses and continuing education, as assigned and provides update summaries if requested. Employee may be required to travel out of the county to obtain certain certifications, which will be at the expense of ACCD.
    • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of ACCD's service to our fellow first responders and community by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of the team.
