    Our Background

    Hattie B. Black Women in Progress is proud to celebrate nine years of empowering young women and four years of immersive overnight camp experiences. Girls Confidence Camp is dedicated to fostering leadership, unity, and self-esteem in girls aged 6-17 through interactive workshops led by experienced women professionals.

    This First-Year Internship opportunity is specifically designed for new interns who have never attended our camp and are eager to develop their leadership skills, build mentorship, and actively contribute to our camp program. Join us in creating meaningful and impactful experiences for our campers while enhancing your personal and professional growth.

    First-Year Intern Responsibilities:

    • Assist with supervision, safety, and camper engagement during bus transportation to and from camp.
    • Mentorship & Leadership: Serve as a mentor and positive role model for campers.
    • Workshop Facilitation: Assist in organizing, leading, and supporting interactive camp activities, ensuring that all necessary materials are prepared.
    • Camper Engagement: Work one-on-one and in groups to ensure all campers are safe and feel supported, included, and encouraged.
    • Logistics & Operations: Help set up, organize, and manage daily camp activities, schedules, and camper needs.
    • Behavioral Guidance: Assist in behavior management, ensuring a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for all participants.
    • Camp Counselor Support: Work as camp counselors, leading team-building activities and ensuring campers engage fully in the experience.
    • Training Attendance: Required to attend all training sessions prior to camp. 
    • Enthusiasm for mentoring and supporting young girls.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate within a team.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned, including but not limited to assisting with camp setup, material preparation, and camper supervision.

    The training we provide will cover:

    • Comprehensive Leadership Training (see below).
    • Accommodations, Meals, and Transportation during camp.
    • A Supportive and Professional Development Environment.
    • Networking Opportunities with Arizona State University (ASU), Arizona Science Center, and STEAM professionals.
    • Internship Stipend: Upon successful completion of the internship program, First-Year Interns (those who have never participated in our camp before) will receive a stipend of $900.

    Minimum Requirements for First-Year Interns:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of camp.
    • Willingness and ability to participate and complete ALL required trainings, including in-person and virtual sessions.
    • Ability to commit to the entire duration of the overnight camp July 7-11, 2025.
    • Physical ability to participate in camp activities, including standing for extended periods, lifting up to 25 lbs, and working outdoors in varied weather conditions.
    • Completion of background check and reference verification.

    **Preference given to qualified undergraduate candidates

    Working Conditions/Environment:

    • Physical Expectations: Ability to stand, walk, and actively engage with campers for long periods. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
    • Outdoor Exposure: Work in mild rocky areas, furnished cabins, and outdoor settings during summer months.
    • Weather Conditions: Frequent monsoons and outdoor activities (hiking, kayaking, archery).
    • Moderate-High Stress Situations: Managing large groups of children requires patience, adaptability, and strong leadership.

    ***Note: This internship position is contingent upon securing grant funding. Final offers and stipends are dependent on funding confirmation.
