  • Background

    Benjamin Franklin Lampkin, Jr. was born May 25, 1937 and was a graduate of Florida A & M University's Political Science Program .  Attorney Lampkin was also one of the original 57 graduates of FAMU College of Law in 1957.  It was obvious wherever his many travels took him he loved and held great pride for his beloved alma mater.  Attorney Lampkin made great strides in the field of Law in Broward County and was the first African American Assistant Public Defender in the State of Florida.  Attorney Lampkin enjoyed representing the underprivileged as well as representing those who could not afford legal representation,  In addition, his professional acumen and obligations, Attorney Lampkin also worked diligently in the FAMU Broward Alumni Chapter for many years until his death on November 2, 2006.  To maintain his exceptional love and dedication for FAMU and the FAMU College of Law, the FAMU NAA Broward Chapter voted in 2009  to honor his legacy with a yearly scholarship to support the FAMU College of Law.  This scholarship is current known as the Benjamin F. Lampkin FAMU College of Law Scholarship.  

  • APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  • PURPOSE: 

    To provide financial support to students attending the Florida A & M University College of Law.  Personal and financial circumstanes of applicants will be taken into consideration for this award .  

    SELECTION CRITERIA: 

    • Be a graduate of Florida A & M University 
    • Be a Broward County resident (If there is no applicant from Broward County, the scholarship may be available to a student from the State of Florida at the discretion of the FAMU NAA Broward Chapter.) 
    • Have been accepted into the Florida A & M University College of Law for the upcoming Fall Semester. 
    • Be an incoming first year law school, or a current fulltime law school student. 
    • Any additional and supporting documents can be sent to famubc1963@gmail.com on or before March 31, 2025.

    APPLICATION PROCEDURE : All eligible applicants are required to electronically submit the following documents: 

    • Completed and Signed Application – All sections of the application must be fully completed and signed before submission.
    • Proof of Acceptance – Provide official documentation confirming acceptance to the Florida A&M University College of Law.
    • Professional Photo – A professional headshot is preferred.
    • Letters of Recommendation – Submit two letters of reference. One must be from a professor (either from your undergraduate institution or FAMU College of Law).
    • Personal and Financial Summary – Provide a one-page summary detailing your personal and/or financial circumstances. Financial need will be considered in the selection process.
    • Essay Requirement – Submit an essay of at least 500 words explaining the area of law you intend to pursue and how it will impact your community         

    AWARD NOTIFICATION: 

    • Scholarship recipients will be identified after all applications have been reviewed and scored. 
    • All applicants will be notified of their award status electronically by email. 
    • All scholarship funds will be awarded directly to Florida A&M University upon verification of the student's acceptance, enrollment, required credit hours, and/or supporting documentation of admission as required by the University.
    • The total value of the award will not exceed $4000.00.  The scholarship will be awarded, the Fall and Spring Academic Semesters,  in 2 (two) equal amounts of $1000.00 per semester for one or two consecutative academic years. ( Amounts does not include summer sessions) .  The scholarship will only be disbursed to the student according to FAMU policies and procedures and that absolutely under no circumstances will checks be made payable directly to a student, parent, guardian or spouse.  
    • If a candiate declines the scholarship, the FAMU NAA Broward Chapter reserves the right to allocate the funds to another candiate who has met all of the required criteria.  The scholarship must be accepted in the year for which it is offered.                                                                             

    APPLICATION DEADLINE: 

    The application period runs from March 1, 2025 to March 31, 2025.  Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
