ACOS Church History (Facilitator: Jamieson)This overview of church history will help you place our United Methodist history in the larger context of the church. Wesley's reading of the ancient church sources shaped him profoundly. They can do the same for us. Sir Isaac Newton once observed, "if I have seen further [than others], it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” It is my hope that this class will expand our vision and therefore make us better servants of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

ACOS Mission - Fresh Expressions and the Blended Ecology of Church (Facilitator: Beck)This course examines inclusive, accessible, transfiguring, and connectional forms of church (i.e. Fresh Expressions). Students will be immersed in the history and theology of the Fresh Expressions movement. This is a practical course in missional ecclesiology. While a rigorous exploration of missiology will be an aspect of the course, it is focused on praxis. Students will hone skills in contextual intelligence, trauma-informed evangelism, anti-racist discipleship, and incarnational church planting. Online classes for facilitating dialogue and answering questions will be held: Wednesday, May 14, 2025: 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, June 4, 2025: 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. ET

ACOS New Testament - The Gospels: Nurturing Biblical Literacy Through Art (Facilitator: Sisson)Before scholarly commentaries became a standard tool of biblical interpreters, Christians relied on visual art to guide them in interpretation of scripture. In the case of the New Testament Gospels, visual depictions of Jesus and his disciples played a major role in shaping Christian understanding of the life and ministry of Jesus and the apostolic foundations of the church. This art connected the Gospels with other biblical writings, and it did so in the context of Christian worship and devotion. Art inspired by the Gospels has long played a vital role in the worship and devotional practices of Christians in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. Some contemporary Christian communities without deep roots in history are (re)discovering the interpretative function of visual art. ACOS Old Testament - Reading from the Margins (Facilitator: Snyder)This Old Testament course invites pastors and church leaders to explore scripture through the eyes of diverse modern-day interpreters. Drawing on voices from marginalized and global perspectives, participants will engage with biblical texts in ways that challenge conventional readings and reveal fresh insights for ministry. The course examines themes such as creation, sexuality, immigration, race, and agrarian life, with an emphasis on practical application in local church contexts. Lectures, readings, and discussions will guide participants in crafting a Bible study tailored to their congregations, equipping them to foster meaningful conversations about scripture in today’s world.
