Jumpstart Your Veterinary Career!
Gain valuable, paid, hands-on experience during your breaks with us.
Hands-on General Practice experience, with a taste of specialty.
Iron Mountain Animal Hospital is an extremely progressive, multi-doctor general practice. Due to our location (3 miles north of the Wisconsin border, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan), we have to be willing to have a large breadth as well as depth of veterinary knowledge and experience. This makes our clinic uniquely capable of providing a meaningful learning experience in a general practice setting. We also collaborate with outside resources, including a board certified surgeon and an ultrasonographer to provide our community access to care that they would typically only find in a larger city. These outside resources also help us provide an even greater learning experience for our students.
Students will be allowed to observe all areas of the clinic, and will work as a veterinary assistant completing hands-on tasks when appropriate (including communicating with clients, performing diagnositics, and assisting in the exam room).
Paid learning experiences today, bonuses and an industry leading salary tomorrow.
We provide an hourly wage during your time in the Undergraduate Internship program at our clinic. This allows you to spend time at our clinic, gaining valuable hours for your veterinary school application, while being paid - so you can gain your hours quickly, without having to compete against a paid summer job.
Students that go on to complete a Veterinary Student Job Program and/or Veterinary Externship Program with us, will be eligible for a $2,000 bonus for each of those programs they complete with us if they join us as an associate veterinarian upon graduation. Progressive medicine, appropriate staffing levels. Privately owned.
During a normal weekday, we have 3 exam room doctors, 1 surgery doctor, 8 veterinary technicians/assistants, 5 client care specialists, 1 practice manager, and one assistant office manager on staff. We pride ourselves in team-based medicine.
We have a full in house lab (Idexx), ultrasound, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, and radio wave frequency surgical capabilities. Our medical records are 100% electronic. We are committed to staying ahead of the medical curve and bringing the best possible medicine to our community. We encourage our doctors to seek out continuing education in topics that interest them and benefit the practice. Our drive is to have your medical interest become your “specialty”. Doing so allows for further growth and development for both the doctor and the practice.
Since we are a privately owned clinic, if you have questions, you don’t have to wait to get the answers you need or feedback on ideas that you have. There is no “management chain” here - simply talk to the decision makers in the clinic directly, and have your voice heard. Being privately owned means there is no “cookie cutter” medicine here - employees get to be directly involved with our clinic’s protocols and future direction of medicine.
Mentorship now. Continued mentorship for new associates. We have years of experience working with students of all ages, including high school, undergrads, and veterinary students, providing them with valuable mentorship, and helping them get started with a successful career in veterinary medicine.
We also have a strong clinic mentorship guide in place for our new associate veterinarians that is based on forming a personalized mentorship plan together with the mentee. We listen to what our new vets need, and allow them to participate in programs like virtual internships if they feel that would help their confidence in those first few years in practice. We also partner with MentorVet for associates that are interested in third party mentorship. Being flexible like this allows an associate vet to earn a salary they deserve, while bettering their clinical knowledge - a win/win! Our management team is committed to offering the best employee experience possible. To support this, we employ a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) and an Office Manager both with over 15 years experience each, who partake in continuing education each year in topics surrounding mentorship, leadership, HR, and other key areas of management. They are committed to staying at the forefront of management strategies and methods.
