Jumpstart Your Veterinary Career!
Complete your Veterinary Technician externship with us and gain valuable experience while working with a team that is experienced in managing externships.
Hands-on General Practice experience, with a taste of specialty.
Iron Mountain Animal Hospital is an extremely progressive, multi-doctor general practice. Due to our location (3 miles north of the Wisconsin border, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan), we have to be willing to have a large breadth as well as depth of veterinary knowledge and experience. This makes our clinic uniquely capable of providing a meaningful externship in a general practice setting. We also collaborate with outside resources, including a board certified surgeon and an ultrasonographer to provide our community access to care that they would typically only find in a larger city. These outside resources also help us provide an even greater externship experience for our students.
Students will be allowed to work as a veterinary assistant, assisting veterinarians and veterinary technicians/assistants with their job duties, while completing the skills they need to perform for their externship.
Learning experiences today, a career tomorrow.
Students that complete a Veteinary Technician Externship with us will be preferentially considered for future employment at our clinic. To learn more about being a Veterinary Technician with us, CLICK HERE.
Progressive medicine, appropriate staffing levels. Privately owned.
During a normal weekday, we have 3 exam room doctors, 1 surgery doctor, 8 veterinary technicians/assistants, 5 client care specialists, 1 practice manager, and one assistant office manager on staff. We pride ourselves in team-based medicine.
We have a full in house lab (Idexx), ultrasound, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, and radio wave frequency surgical capabilities. Our medical records are 100% electronic. We are committed to staying ahead of the medical curve and bringing the best possible medicine to our community. We encourage our doctors to seek out continuing education in topics that interest them and benefit the practice. Our drive is to have your medical interest become your “specialty”. Doing so allows for further growth and development for both the doctor and the practice.
Since we are a privately owned clinic, if you have questions, you don’t have to wait to get the answers you need or feedback on ideas that you have. There is no “management chain” here - simply talk to the decision makers in the clinic directly, and have your voice heard. Being privately owned means there is no “cookie cutter” medicine here - employees get to be directly involved with our clinic’s protocols and future direction of medicine.
Mentorship, from day one. Not only are we experienced in mentoring externs, we have a strong clinic mentorship guide in place for new employees with an extended training program that is based on rotations. In each rotation, the new employee is assigned to a designed Mentor, who works with them to practice our protocols and procedures, hands-on. We also have digital training that accompanies each training rotation, to ensure that when the new employee is done with training, they are completely confident to hit the ground running. We all know that "new employee" feeling, and we don't ever want anyone to feel like they don't know what they are doing after they've done through training here!
Our management team is committed to offering the best employee experience possible. To support this, we employ a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) and an Office Manager both with over 15 years experience each, who partake in continuing education each year in topics surrounding mentorship, leadership, HR, and other key areas of management. They are committed to staying at the forefront of management strategies and methods.
