We want your thoughts on reducing speed limits in Community Safety Zones in Vaughan!
The City of Vaughan continues to advance road safety for all road users, particularly children, older adults and other vulnerable persons. The MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy reinforces our mandate to advancing transportation and mobility, while enhancing road safety, and supporting sustainable active transportation options like cycling and walking.
As a commitment to road safety, the City is assessing whether speed limits should be reduced in Community Safety Zones, which include all school zones. The City is considering further enhancing safety measures by reducing speed limits from 40 kilometres per hour to 30 kilometres per hour.
To help inform this work, the City would like to better understand the community’s perspective on this potential change. The results of this survey will inform whether to amend the City’s existing Speed Limit Policy (PDF) and Community Safety Zone Policy (PDF).
What are Community Safety Zones?
Community Safety Zones are locations where ensuring public safety may require enhanced measures and increased enforcement and fines may be beneficial. The City has developed a Community Safety Zone Policy which outlines criteria and a two-step process for determining whether an area should be designated as a Community Safety Zone. School Zones are the only areas in Vaughan that are automatically designated as a Community Safety Zone. All other areas must meet the Community Safety Zone Policy criteria to qualify including factors such as truck traffic, collision history, number of travel lanes and presence of sidewalks and bus stops.
This survey will be available online until Aug. 5, 2025, and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. If you are not able to complete the survey online, other options are available, including telephone or paper copies.
