Call for an increase of European support for journalism and free media worldwide

At this critical point in time, independent journalists, public interest media and civil society organisations in countries around the world need decisive support. They are directly and severely impacted by the current US administration’s decision to freeze financial support to independent media.

Therefore, we - a coalition of media organisations concerned with media freedom, journalists' safety, and every person's right to access unbiased and fact-based information - call on the European Union and European states to step up their support for independent media. 

Robust financial and political support are urgently needed to ensure that independent public interest media can survive this imminent crisis. 

Reliable information saves lives, fosters accountability and empowers people to make informed decisions. Without it, people in all parts of the world will be adversely affected, and not only those living in low- and middle-income countries. Wherever reliable, independent media are weakened, propaganda and vested interests inevitably fill the gap.

We are facing the risk of a mass silencing of independent media that will have an immense social impact and further imperil the global development agenda and international peace. 

Free, pluralistic and reliable public interest media are indispensable for democracy and human progress. At this critical time, comprehensive European support is vital to their survival.

Initiated by the following European media development organisations:

CFI (France), DW Akademie (Germany), Fondation Hirondelle (Switzerland) and International Media Support (Denmark).

Appel à un renforcement du soutien européen au journalisme et aux médias libres dans le monde

En cette période critique, les journalistes indépendants, les médias d'intérêt public et les organisations de la société civile dans tous les pays du monde ont besoin d'un soutien décisif. Ils sont directement et gravement touchés par la décision de l'actuelle administration américaine de geler le soutien financier aux médias indépendants.

C'est pourquoi nous - une coalition d'organisations des médias engagées en faveur de la liberté des médias, de la sécurité des journalistes et du droit de chacun et de chacune à accéder à une information impartiale et fondée sur les faits - appelons l'Union européenne et les États européens à renforcer leur soutien aux médias indépendants.

Un solide soutien financier et politique est urgemment nécessaire afin que les médias indépendants d'intérêt public puissent survivre à cette crise imminente.

Les informations fiables sauvent des vies, favorisent la responsabilisation et permettent aux citoyens et aux citoyennes de prendre des décisions en connaissance de cause. Sans elles, les populations de toutes les régions du monde seront affectées, et pas uniquement celles qui vivent dans les pays à faible ou moyen revenu. Lorsque des médias fiables et indépendants sont affaiblis, la propagande et les intérêts particuliers comblent inévitablement le vide ainsi laissé.

Nous sommes confrontés au risque que les médias indépendants soient massivement réduits au silence, ce qui provoquera un immense impact sociétal et mettra encore plus en péril les objectifs de développement durable et la paix internationale.

Des médias d'intérêt public libres, pluralistes et fiables sont indispensables à la démocratie et au progrès humain. En cette période critique, un soutien européen global est vital pour leur survie.

Petición de un mayor apoyo europeo al periodismo y a los medios de comunicación libres en el mundo 

En este momento crítico, periodistas independientes, medios de comunicación de interés público y organizaciones de la sociedad civil de países de todo el mundo necesitan un apoyo contundente. La decisión de la actual administración estadounidense de suspender el apoyo financiero a los medios de comunicación independientes les afecta de forma directa y grave.

Por ello, desde esta coalición de organizaciones de medios de comunicación preocupadas por la libertad de los medios de comunicación, la seguridad de quienes ejercen el periodismo y el derecho de toda persona a acceder a una información veraz y contrastada, pedimos a la Unión Europea y a los Estados europeos que intensifiquen su apoyo a los medios de comunicación independientes.

Urge un sólido apoyo financiero y político para garantizar que los medios de comunicación independientes de interés público puedan sobrevivir a esta inminente crisis.

La información contrastada salva vidas, fomenta la rendición de cuentas y empodera a las personas para tomar decisiones informadas. Su ausencia perjudica a las personas de todo el mundo, y no solo a quienes viven en países de renta media y baja. Allí donde se debilitan los medios de comunicación rigurosos e independientes, se crea un vacío por donde inevitablemente entran la propaganda y los intereses creados.

Nos enfrentamos al riesgo de un silenciamiento masivo de los medios de comunicación independientes que tendrá un inmenso impacto social y pondrá aún más en peligro la agenda global de desarrollo y la paz internacional. 

Los medios de comunicación de interés público libres, pluralistas y fiables son indispensables para la democracia y el progreso humano. En este momento crítico, un decidido apoyo europeo es fundamental para su supervivencia.

Iniciado por las siguientes organizaciones europeas de desarrollo de medios de comunicación:

Aufruf für mehr europäische Unterstützung für Journalismus und freie Medien weltweit

Unabhängige Journalistinnen und Journalisten, freie Medien und Organisationen der Zivilgesellschaft brauchen in diesem Moment unsere entschlossene Unterstützung! In vielen Ländern wirkt sich die Entscheidung der US-Regierung, die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit einzufrieren, unmittelbar auf unabhängige Medien aus.

Deshalb fordern wir – eine Koalition von Medienorganisationen, die sich für die Freiheit der Medien, die Sicherheit von Medienschaffenden und das Recht aller Menschen auf Zugang zu unvoreingenommenen und faktenbasierten Informationen einsetzen – die Europäische Union und die europäischen Staaten auf, ihre Unterstützung für unabhängige Medien weltweit zu verstärken.

Ohne eine solide finanzielle und politische Unterstützung ist keineswegs sicher, ob unabhängige, im Interesse der Allgemeinheit arbeitende Medien die aktuell drohende Krise überstehen werden.

Verlässliche Informationen retten Leben. Sie fördern die Rechenschaft staatlichen Handelns und befähigen Menschen, fundierte Entscheidungen zu treffen.

Fallen verlässliche Information weg, betrifft das die ganze Welt, nicht nur Menschen in ärmeren Ländern. Wo zuverlässige, unabhängige Medien geschwächt werden, füllen Propaganda und eigennützige Interessen unweigerlich die Lücke.

Es besteht aktuell die Gefahr, dass unabhängige Medien massenhaft zum Schweigen gebracht werden. Es drohen immense soziale Auswirkungen und neue Gefahren für die globale Entwicklungsagenda und den internationalen Frieden.

Freie, pluralistische und zuverlässige Medien von öffentlichem Interesse sind für demokratisches Zusammenleben und den menschlichen Fortschritt unverzichtbar. Ihre umfassende europäische Unterstützung ist jetzt so wichtig wie nie!
