Submission request:
Native Performing Arts Network invites submissions of Indigiqueer* plays of any length. Plays may be produced or unproduced plays.
Opportunity details:
--up to 15 plays will be recommended to the wider theater community through New Play Exchange, to be published in March 2027.
--at least 3 playwrights will receive $300.
--at least 2 playwrights will receive a reading of their play in 2027/2028. Readings will take place as part of an Indigiqueer Theater Festival in Portland, Oregon.
Deadlines and Notifications:
Regular deadline: November 30th
We are reading plays as they come in, and encourage you to submit as soon as you can. All plays received by November 30th will be read and considered.
Late submissions: Submissions received December 1st to December 31st will be read as organization capacity allows.
Notifications: Playwrights will be notified on a rolling basis beginning January 31st, and all playwrights will be notified by March 10, 2027.
Background:
2SLGBTQIA+ Native youth attempt suicide 66% more frequently than their non-Native peers. Those rates plummet when Native youth feel accepted by their community and have access to cultural spaces.
This opportunity is about celebrating the diversity of the queer Native experience. We especially encourage plays of 2SLGBGTQIA+ Native joy, plays that show our kids, it does get better. We also look for plays that shed light on the harm done when Native communities fail to wrap our kids in love and acceptance. We look for plays that make our queer Native youth truly feel that they are their ancestors' dreams.
*By Indigiqueer, we mean plays that live in the intersection of both Indigenous and queer (2SLGBTQIA+). Plays must be about the unique experiences of being both Indigenous and queer (two-spirit, trans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, intersexual, asexual, non-heteronormative).
