  • I am writing to you regarding cuts to disability funding, and how this is hurting disabled people and their whānau in our community, as well as dedicated workers who provide essential support services.

  • The disability sector is facing immense challenges, including:

    1. Lack of Adequate Support for Disabled Individuals – Many disabled people struggle to access the services they need to live independently and participate fully in society. Insufficient funding has led to long wait times for essential equipment, personal care, and therapy services.
    2. Strain on Families and Caregivers – Families of disabled individuals often bear a significant financial and emotional burden due to limited support services. Many caregivers are forced to reduce their work hours or leave employment entirely to care for their loved ones, impacting their financial stability and mental well-being.
    3. Underfunded and Overworked Support Workers – Disability Support Workers play a critical role in ensuring the dignity and well-being of disabled individuals. However, low wages, high workloads, and a lack of job security have led to high turnover rates in the sector. Increased funding is needed to ensure fair wages, proper training, and better working conditions to attract and retain skilled professionals.
    4. Increased Demand Due to an Aging Population – As New Zealand's population ages, the demand for disability support services is rising. Without additional investment, the system will continue to be stretched beyond its limits, leaving many vulnerable individuals without the care they need.

I urge the Government to increase funding for the disability sector to address these issues and ensure that all disabled people in Aotearoa New Zealand receive the support they deserve.

Investing in this sector is not just a matter of equity but also one that strengthens our communities, promotes inclusion, and upholds our country's commitment to human rights.

I appreciate your time in considering this matter and would welcome any opportunity to discuss this issue further. My contact details are:
