2023 GSGSSI - General RAP application
  • Regulated Activity Permit Application

    Notification
  • The Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) has a tiered system of Regulated Activity Permits (RAP). These help ensure that environmental assessments are scalable and commensurate with the potential impacts of activities. To make sure you are completing the correct category of application form for your project, please follow the flowchart here

A RAP notification allows projects to inform GSGSSI of their intention to conduct research or media activities that do not require a full RAP application. GSGSSI will assess the planned activities and log them in the RAP database to aid mornitoring in marine and terrestrial Protected Areas

Please complete the form as accurately as you can. Missing information may delay the processing of your application. Fields marked * with are compulsory.

Applications should be submitted 60 days prior to the intended start date.

  • Part 5 - Environmental Protection Regulations

The Wildlife and Protected Areas Ordinance 2011, offers wide ranging protection to the environment of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). Various activities are prohibited and anyone undertaking them requires a permit before undertaking them. In 2022 this protection was strengthened when two Specially Protected Areas were declared that covered the whole landmass of SGSSI. In support of these, Specially Protected Area Management Plan and Prohibited Activity Regulations were 2023. The following questions will determine if your activity will breach, and therefore require a permit, under either of these pieces of legislation and will ensure appropriate mitigation is in place

  • 5. d) Does your project involve killing, capturing or handling any live wild bird, mammal e.g taking blood, feather samples, diet samples, attaching tracking devices?*
