Brief Information
Sugaring is a natural and gentle method of hair removal that has been used for centuries. Sugaring uses a paste made from just sugar, lemon, and water, making it a great option for sensitive skin.
The sugaring paste is applied at body temperature, meaning there’s no risk of burns. It is removed in the direction of hair growth, reducing breakage and minimizing ingrown hairs. Because it only adheres to dead skin cells and hair, sugaring exfoliates while removing hair, leaving the skin smooth and soft.
For the best results, multiple sessions are required to fully train the hair to grow in finer and sparser. Sugaring is most effective when done consistently every 3-5 weeks, as this helps remove hair in its optimal growth stage. With regular maintenance, clients can experience longer-lasting smoothness and a reduction in hair growth over time.
Preparatory Care Procedures
1. Hair Length: Make sure the hair in the area to be treated is between 1/8 to 1/4 inch long (about the length of a grain of rice). If it’s too short, the paste won’t adhere properly, and if it’s too long, it may cause more discomfort.
2. Exfoliate: Exfoliate the skin 48 hours before your appointment to remove dead skin cells and minimize the risk of ingrown hairs. Avoid using any harsh scrubs the day of your appointment.
3. Avoid Lotion or Oil: On the day of your appointment, avoid applying lotions, oils, or deodorant to the area being treated, as these can create a barrier between the skin and the sugaring paste, making the process less effective.
4. Avoid Sun Exposure & Tanning: Stay out of the sun or avoid tanning beds for 48 hours before your appointment, as sunburned skin is more sensitive and may increase the risk of irritation.
5. No Heavy Exfoliating Products: Avoid using products like retinol, glycolic acid, or any prescription-strength exfoliants at least 1 week before your session, as these can make your skin more sensitive.
6. Wear Loose Clothing: For comfort, wear loose-fitting clothing to your appointment, especially in areas like the bikini or underarms, to prevent irritation after your session.
7. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water leading up to your appointment to keep your skin hydrated and supple. Well-hydrated skin is easier to work with and more resilient to the sugaring process.
Potential Risks and Expectations
I understand that sugaring involves the removal of hair using a natural sugar paste. I acknowledge that:
• Temporary redness, irritation, and sensitivity are normal after treatment.
• Skin lifting, bruising, or ingrown hairs may occur, especially if aftercare is not followed.
• The risk of irritation increases with certain medications, skincare products, or failure to disclose medical conditions.
• It is my responsibility to inform my esthetician of any discomfort or unusual reactions.
Discomfort. Patients may experience discomfort during the treatment. Please take note that this is a normal occurrence.
Post care.
After your sugaring treatment, avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for 24-48 hours to prevent irritation. Stay out of the sun and avoid tanning for at least 48 hours; if you go outside, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Wear loose clothing to prevent friction, especially around sensitive areas.
Exfoliate gently after 2-3 days to help prevent ingrown hairs and keep the skin hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Avoid scented lotions, deodorants, or body sprays for the first 24-48 hours.
For the next 48 hours, avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, or oceans, and try not to touch the treated areas to prevent irritation. Lastly, refrain from shaving between appointments to allow hair to grow properly for the next session.
