• Kinetic Hockey Elite Game Skills and Situation Camp

  • This will be year 3 for our Game Skills and Situational IQ Camp.  There will be changes this year with a few new focuses that we as coaches see lacking in players from youth through pro.  There will be a massive emphasis placed on battling and puck protection.  There is/are multiple battle situations every shift, so we are going to attack these battle situations and get very good at them amongst other things.

This will not be the typical camp you are use to where it's powerskating in the morning, off ice, and then a skill session and then a game session.

This camp will be hockey sense focused - we will be teaching game specific scenarios.  Our goal with this camp is to give each player skills and scenario specific training they can take with them right into their season and implement right away.  Ben, Paddy, and Alex, my other coaches (staff bios below) were excellent players, and are excellent teachers of the game and I am excited to bring them down here to Maryland to share their knowledge that they have acquired from all the experiences that not many have.

Before each session we will be doing video on what we will be teaching on the ice that day so they have the visual on it and can see it done.

This year we are adding Patrick (Paddy) Sexton to our coaching staff.  Paddy is currently an assistant coach for the Oshawa Generals in the OHL.  Paddy played NCAA D1 at Wisconsin before embarking on a coaching career that started with 5 seasons in the BCHL before returning to Ontario where he is from and the OHL.

    The curriculum for the camp:

    - Both forwards and D will work battling and body position.  Whether its a puck race headed into the boards, an open ice puck race, a net front battle, a wall battle, and more - we will be creating all of these scenarios and breaking them down.  Even at the highest levels - NHL, NCAA, and Juniors, players are lacking the necessary knowledge, and truthfully the mindset required to battle.

    1) Players need to get more mean, tougher and more intense in battles - we will show clips of the intensity and grit required which is just a mindset.

    2) Body position - you do not have to be the fastest or quickest to win races, you just have to know how to win the race for body position, not the puck.  Then hip and body position in battles.

From here, we will do Forward and D splits and do positional focused work.

    - U10 Group will have a heavy battle focus and foundational skill base to it. It will not progress from 1 subject to the next as quickly as the older groups because we want to ensure each element is being understood and grasped before moving on.

    Forward Focus:

    - Face-offs
    - Offensive retrievals-creating deception to escape being closed on-details and things     to look for
    - How to feel pressure
    - Puck protection - getting position before possession-feeling the check on you- creating leverage
    - Wall play- how to pick up rims - how to deaden a puck

    - Small plays- how to throw a saucer pass-when to throw a saucer pass etc
       Angling

    - 2v1's - what to look for, how to move D to get what you want
    - Creating Shooting Lanes and how to use opponents as screens

    D focus:

    - Defending the rush - - Pivots and lateral gap - various ways to defend rush

    - Puck retrievals and deception on retrievals

    - Defending 2v1's so we don't give up anything - we can do way more than just take away the pass
    - Making small plays and how to manipulate checkers to execute
    - Stick positioning and creating pins to end plays/players
    - Offensive blue line patterns- how to walk the line- things to look for when walking       the line to get pucks through
    - How to box-out and the technique of it

Faceoffs - a lot more than just lining up - the process will be discussed in detail
