  • Part 5 - Environmental Protection Regulations

The Wildlife and Protected Areas Ordinance 2011, offers wide ranging protection to the environment of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). Various activities are prohibited and anyone undertaking them requires a permit before undertaking them. In 2022 this protection was strengthened when two Specially Protected Areas were declared that covered the whole landmass of SGSSI. In support of these, Specially Protected Area Management Plan and Prohibited Activity Regulations were enacted in 2023. The following questions will determine if your activity will breach, and therefore require a permit, under either of these pieces of legislation and will ensure appropriate mitigation is in place
  • Disturbance of wildlife

  • 5. Does your project of use any active acoustics outside of those used as part of normal navigation or in licensed fisheries?*
  • 5. b) Does your project involve working in close proximity to wildlife - this includes when working at or transiting to your field site (i.e proximity that may result in disturbance see 'Guidance on when to apply for a RAP')?
  • 5. c) Does your project involve killing, capturing or handling any live wild bird, mammal e.g taking blood, feather samples, diet samples, attaching tracking devices?*
