Black History Month 2025 – Call for Award Nominees

The National Black Coalition of Canada - Edmonton (NBCC) Banquet & Excellence Awards recognizes and honours individuals or groups in Alberta, who have made outstanding contributions to our community and society at large.
Banquet & Awards of Excellence 2025

The Banquet & Excellence Awards is an annual celebration held in honor of Black History Month. Hosted by the National Black Coalition of Canada – Edmonton (NBCC), this event recognizes outstanding Black individuals and groups who have made significant contributions in various fields, including community service, athletics, education, personal or academic achievement, and the arts.

Event Details:
📅 Date: Saturday, March 29, 2025
📍 Venue: Chateau Louis Hotel & Conference Centre, 11727 Kingsway Ave, Edmonton

Nomination Guidelines:
a. Nominees (except for the Mary Burlie Award) must be Black individuals or groups.
b.Eligible nominees should have demonstrated excellence in a specific project, service, or performance.
c. A nominee cannot be a current member of NBCC’s executive team or the nominee selection committee.
d. The selection committee, in consultation with nominators, may reclassify nominations to a more suitable category.

Submitting Nominations:
a. Each nomination form must be completed and signed by two (2) nominators.
b. Forms can be obtained by contacting NBCC or downloading them from our website.
c. Deadline for submission: March 12, 2025.
d. Email completed forms to info@nbccedmonton.ca or nbccedmonton@gmail.com.
e. Each nomination must include at least two (2) color photographs of the nominee, relevant to the award category.

The Banquet & Excellence Awards is an annual celebration recognizing Black excellence in various fields, including community service, education, the arts, athletics, and professional achievements.

Nomination Guidelines:

Eligibility: Nominees (except for the Mary Burlie Award) must be Black individuals or groups.

Categories: Nominations can be made for specific projects, services, education, personal/academic achievement, or performances.

Reclassification: The selection committee, in collaboration with nominators, may reassign nominations to a more suitable category.

Age Requirement: There is no age limit, except for the Youth Award (see below).
Re-Nomination: Individuals and/or groups can be nominated annually in any category.

Award Categories:
📌 Mary Burlie Award
Recognizes individuals or groups, regardless of ethnic origin, who deliver effective programs and/or services to the Black community.

📌 Fil Fraser Award
Honors individuals or groups for outstanding contributions in literary, performing, and/or visual arts.

📌 Clarence "Big" Miller Award
Awarded to individuals or groups in the Black community for excellence in vocal or instrumental performance, music composition, or instruction.

📌 Youth (NBCC) Award
Recognizes young Black individuals (aged 24 – 35 years or younger) or groups who have demonstrated academic excellence and/or delivered exceptional programs and services within the Black community or society at large.

📌 Peter "Sugarfoot" Cunningham Award
Presented to individuals or groups from the Black community who have demonstrated excellence in athletics and/or sports performance.

📌 Rosalind Smith Award – Professional
Honors individuals or groups from the Black community who have provided exceptional and prolonged service in any profession.

📌 Rosalind Smith Award – Business
Recognizes individuals or groups from the Black community who own and operate a business with outstanding service and impact.

📌 Dr. John Akabutu Award
Awarded to individuals who have demonstrated resiliency in overcoming challenging odds.

📌 Noel Chen Award
Recognizes individuals currently enrolled in a college or vocational training program in the trades or registered as an Alberta apprentice in a trade. Nominees must also provide proof of voluntary service to the community.

Submission Requirements:
🔹 All nominations must be accompanied by a minimum of two (2) color photographs of the nominee, relevant to the nominated category.

CANDIDATES MUST BE NOMINATED BY TWO (2) PERSONS FAMILIAR WITH THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS. NOMINATION FORMS CAN BE OBTAINED AT www.nbccedmonton.ca OR BY CONTACTING NBCC at 780-425-0319. COMPLETED FORMS MUST BE RETURNED BY March 12, 2025
