The Banquet & Excellence Awards is an annual celebration recognizing Black excellence in various fields, including community service, education, the arts, athletics, and professional achievements.
Nomination Guidelines:
Eligibility: Nominees (except for the Mary Burlie Award) must be Black individuals or groups.
Categories: Nominations can be made for specific projects, services, education, personal/academic achievement, or performances.
Reclassification: The selection committee, in collaboration with nominators, may reassign nominations to a more suitable category.
Age Requirement: There is no age limit, except for the Youth Award (see below).
Re-Nomination: Individuals and/or groups can be nominated annually in any category.
Award Categories:
π Mary Burlie Award
Recognizes individuals or groups, regardless of ethnic origin, who deliver effective programs and/or services to the Black community.
π Fil Fraser Award
Honors individuals or groups for outstanding contributions in literary, performing, and/or visual arts.
π Clarence "Big" Miller Award
Awarded to individuals or groups in the Black community for excellence in vocal or instrumental performance, music composition, or instruction.
π Youth (NBCC) Award
Recognizes young Black individuals (aged 24 β 35 years or younger) or groups who have demonstrated academic excellence and/or delivered exceptional programs and services within the Black community or society at large.
π Peter "Sugarfoot" Cunningham Award
Presented to individuals or groups from the Black community who have demonstrated excellence in athletics and/or sports performance.
π Rosalind Smith Award β Professional
Honors individuals or groups from the Black community who have provided exceptional and prolonged service in any profession.
π Rosalind Smith Award β Business
Recognizes individuals or groups from the Black community who own and operate a business with outstanding service and impact.
π Dr. John Akabutu Award
Awarded to individuals who have demonstrated resiliency in overcoming challenging odds.
π Noel Chen Award
Recognizes individuals currently enrolled in a college or vocational training program in the trades or registered as an Alberta apprentice in a trade. Nominees must also provide proof of voluntary service to the community.
Submission Requirements:
πΉ All nominations must be accompanied by a minimum of two (2) color photographs of the nominee, relevant to the nominated category.
