  • About Dr. Paul Kostecki

    Dr. Paul T. Kostecki’s professional career has focused on research, education and training in environmental contamination with an emphasis on human and ecological risk assessment and risk management of soils. His work includes soil ingestion estimates for children and adults; establishment of scientifically sound cleanup levels for soil; bioavailability of soil contaminants; fish as toxicological models for contamination assessment; and assessment and management of petroleum contaminated soils. Dr. Kostecki has developed and conducted over 60 conferences, workshops and courses both nationally and internationally, and has made presentations at over 100 national and international meetings. Since 1985, his conference at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Contaminated Soils, Sediments and Water has attracted over 10,000 environmental professionals from over 50 countries. Dr. Kostecki has published over 100 articles and reports, co-edited/co-authored 35 Books and secured over $15M in research support.

    Dr. Kostecki co-created the Association for Environmental Health and Sciences (AEHS) in 1989 and served as its Executive Director until 2009. In 2009, he established the AEHS Foundation and serves as the President. AEHS and the Foundation has conducted 30+ international and national conferences on Contaminated Soils, Sediments, Water and Energy since 1990; developed several ‘Blue Ribbon’ Scientific Committees for Superfund Sites; overseen academic research and provided consulting services to international and national agencies, industries and engineering firms.

    Dr. Kostecki helped found Amherst Scientific Publishers and co-created seven peer- reviewed journals: Journal of Soil and Sediment Contamination (1990); Human and Ecological Risk Assessment (1994); Journal of Phytoremediation (1998); Journal of Environmental Forensics (1999); Journal of Children’s Health (2003); Non-Linearity Journal (2003); and Journal of Medical Risks (2004) as well as Soils and Groundwater Magazine (1992). In addition, Dr. Kostecki co-created the International Society for Environmental Forensics in 2002.

    Dr. Kostecki served as Vice Provost for Research and Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 2003 to 2009. He served as Special Advisor for the Clean Energy China Initiative, Office of the President, University of Massachusetts from 2009 – 2011. He briefly left the University of Massachusetts Amherst to establish the online education program for Simmons College, Boston, MA (2011 -2012). He is presently Professor Emeritus, Environmental Health in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts, Amherst.reviewed journals: Journal of Soil and Sediment Contamination (1990); Human and Ecological Risk Assessment (1994); Journal of Phytoremediation (1998); Journal of Environmental Forensics (1999); Journal of Children’s Health (2003); Non-Linearity Journal (2003); and Journal of Medical Risks (2004) as well as Soils and Groundwater Magazine (1992).   • Scholarship Purpose: The Kostecki Memorial Scholarship aims to honor Dr. Paul Kostecki's passion for education, scientific research, and medical advancement. This scholarship will support deserving students who share these same qualities in an effort to advance medical innovation and research.

    Eligibility: HOSA students interested in neuroscience and research, from rising freshman to graduating seniors in high school

    Deadline: The Kostecki Memorial Scholarship applications must be received no later than December 5th, 2025, to be considered. All scholarships will announced on January 15th, 2026.

    Scholarship Awards: One full scholarship to attend the Leadership Initiatives Advanced Medical Neuroscience Internship for one of the following sessions:

    • June 28th - July 4th, 2026

    • July 5th – July 11th, 2026

    • July 12th – July 18th, 2026

    The Kostecki Memorial Scholarship will also fund ten partial scholarships to attend the Leadership Initiatives Advanced Medical Neuroscience Internship.

  • I understand that the 2026 Dr. Paul Kostecki Memorial Scholarship can only be used to attend the Leadership Initiatives Advanced Medical Neuroscience Internship held at Georgetown University from June 28th - July 4th, 2026; July 5th – July 11th, 2026; or July 12th – July 18th, 2026.  This scholarship cannot be transferred to any other program or institution or be requested as a payment. 

    All applications received after the deadline of December 5th, 2025, will not be considered to receive this scholarship. Decisions will be made by the Leadership Initiatives Scholarship Committee and will be announcedat on January 15th, 2026.
