High School Journalism Institute 2025 Application
Apply to join us on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis from July 12-19, 2025. The deadline to apply is May 5.

Before you begin, examine the eligibility section below, then gather the following materials.
- A brief personal statement on why you want to participate in the institute.
- Examples of work published through your student newspaper or other school media, if such programs are available at your school.
- A letter of recommendation from a teacher.
- A one-page essay on one of these topics:
  1. Part of being a good journalist is keeping up on current events that affect your community. Write about something that happened in your school or community that you felt was of significance. What happened? How did it affect you?
  2. Describe your efforts to overcome obstacles such as financial barriers or discrimination. How did this affect your life, and what did you learn in the process?

Eligibility

To be considered for the institute, a student must:

- Life experiences that are substantially different from Oregon academic peers.
- Being from a low-income household or a household with an educational attainment level of a high school diploma or less.
- A documented disability or eligibility for special education services sometime during K-12.
