On April 22, 1625, the Amsterdam Chamber, the governing body of the Dutch West India Company, voted to both purchase the island of Manhattan and to erect a fort at its southern tip. That fortification, Fort Amsterdam, would dominate lower Manhattan from the Dutch colonial era through the American Revolution.
On the 400th anniversary of the fort's establishment -- which is the reason "1625" is emblazoned at the bottom of the official seal of the City of New York to this day -- we'll look at how the Dutch West India Company went about securing their toehold in New Netherland, as well as seeing the Dutch's militancy as it compared to the country's incursions in the Caribbean, Africa, the East Indies, and beyond.
