Subject: Opposition to East Point Battery Storage Project called Melrose Energy Center off Cardwell Road
Dear Members of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors and Administrators,
We, the undersigned residents of Goochland County, write to express our strong opposition to the proposed East Point Battery Storage Project located off Cardwell Road. This project raises significant concerns regarding community safety, environmental impact, and property values in our residential neighborhood.
Community Safety and Environmental Concerns
The installation of a large-scale battery storage facility in close proximity to our homes, farms, churces, and schools presents potential hazards, including risks of fires or chemical leaks. Such incidents could have detrimental effects on both residents and the local environment. These facilities across the country have a track recods of local officials having to issue various warning to protect nearby residents including evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, School closures, toxic smoke warnings. These measures underscore the challenges of managing lithium-ion battery fires which produce toxic emissions and are difficult to extinguish safely.
Alignment with Goochland County's Zoning Laws and Long-Term Plan
While we acknowledge that East Point Energy may not require rezoning due to recent legislative changes, we believe that approving this conditional use permit contradicts the intent of Goochland County's stringent zoning regulations and comprehensive plan. Our community has relied on these frameworks to maintain the character and safety of our neighborhoods.
Impact on Property Values
The presence of an industrial facility within a residential area is likely to negatively affect property values. This outcome is unfair to homeowners who have invested in this community with the expectation of a stable and secure environment.
In light of these concerns, we respectfully urge the Board to vote against the conditional use permit for the East Point Battery Storage Project. Protecting the well-being of our residents and preserving the integrity of our neighborhoods should remain a priority.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned Goochland Constituents.
