  • SOWELA New Student Orientation

    SOWELA's New Student Orientation will help incoming students feel connected to SOWELA, faculty, staff, and other students while creating a welcoming atmosphere that builds a sense of community among the incoming class. Orientation will provide new students with academic program expectations. New students will be made aware of the resources and services available to assist with their academic, personal, and professional growth.

  • All new to SOWELA students are expected to attend one of the orientation sessions. Students are welcome to attend any of the on-site new student orientations in Lake Charles, Morgan Smith (Jennings), Oakdale, or Lamar Salter (Leesville).

    Many of the topics discussed and the how to guides presented at Orientation apply to students that are registered for Summer and/or Fall 2025 classes.

    • Advisors will begin emailing students in mid-to-late-March 2025 to share their Calendly appointment scheduling link. 
    • Advising for Summer and Fall 2025 begins the week of March 17, 2025. This is also when the Summer and Fall 2025 class schedules are viewable. 
    • In the event you have not received communication from your advisor (and advising has begun for Summer and Fall 2025), please feel free to email fastadvising@sowela.edu and include your Name, Student L# (found on your acceptance letter), Campus, Program/Major, Contact Phone #, and state that you would like to schedule your advising appointment. 
    • Registration for Summer and Fall 2025 opens on March 31, 2025.
    • Regular Registration for Summer 2025 closes on May 20, 2025, at 11:59 pm.
    • Regular Registration for Fall 2025 closes on August 4, 2025, at 11:59 pm.
    • Late registration dates are referenced on the Academic Calendars found here https://www.sowela.edu/calendar/

    Check-in for orientation will begin approximately thirty minutes before the scheduled orientation.

    • Main Campus (Lake Charles) Orientation sessions can last between two and one-half to three hours with the exception of the August 6, 2025, session which likely last around two hours.
    • Lamar Salter, Oakdale, and Jenings Orientation sessions typically last between one and one-half to two hours.

    If you are attending a Lake Charles' Orientation session, please report to the Sycamore Student Center (Building #7) on the Lake Charles Campus Map.

    If you are attending an orientation session at Morgan Smith (Jennings), at Oakdale, or at Lamar Salter (Leesville), please park in the parking lot and check-in at the front office of that Instructional Site.
