    Please note: Volunteer McKinney's Board of Directors is a working board.

    General Expectations

    • Support Volunteer McKinney's mission, vision, values, goals, policies, and programs while understanding its strengths and needs.
    • Suggest potential nominees to the Board who are accomplished and can make significant contributions to the Board and Volunteer McKinney.
    • Serve actively on Board committees.
    • Participate in planning and supporting activities and events sponsored by Volunteer McKinney.

    Meetings

    • Prepare for and participate in monthly Board meetings, committee meetings, and the Board retreat/orientation.
    • Ask timely and substantive questions consistent with personal conscience, convictions, and ethics, while supporting majority decisions of the Board.
    • Maintain confidentiality of Board meetings and executive sessions; speak for the Board or Volunteer McKinney only when authorized.
    • Board meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month unless otherwise determined by the Board President and Executive Director.
      • Scheduled meeting time: 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM
      • 75% attendance is expected. Meetings are in-person, with Zoom available only as an exception.

    Events

    • Attend and participate in key Volunteer McKinney events:
      • Make a Difference Day: 4th weekend of October (depending on year)
      • Spirit of Volunteerism Awards Ceremony: Typically in April
      • Quarterly Executive Leadership Breakfasts: Optional but encouraged
      • Community events and engagement opportunities are encouraged but optional.

    Avoiding Conflicts

    • Serve Volunteer McKinney rather than any specific interest group or constituency.
    • Avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest and disclose any potential conflicts to the Board in a timely manner.
    • Do not accept or offer favors or gifts from/to anyone who does business with Volunteer McKinney.

    Fiduciary Responsibility

    • Exercise prudence and sound fiscal practices in controlling and transferring funds.
    • Review and understand financial statements to help the Board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities.

    Fundraising

    • 100% Board participation in annual contributions to Volunteer McKinney.
    • Assist in developing and implementing fund development strategies.
    • Support fundraising efforts as needed.

    As a prospective Board member, your commitment to Volunteer McKinney’s mission and sustainability is crucial. This includes:

    Personal Contributions:

    • Each Board member is expected to make an annual financial contribution. The amount is secondary to the commitment and demonstrates support for the mission.

    Identifying Funding Opportunities:

    • Leverage your networks and expertise to identify potential funding sources, including grants, sponsorships, and partnerships aligned with organizational goals. Your efforts are essential for financial stability and growth.

    By fulfilling these commitments, you help advance Volunteer McKinney’s mission and ensure programs and services continue to thrive. Your participation is valued and makes a meaningful impact.
