As part of the Tilt-Up Achievement Awards program, submitting companies now have the opportunity to apply for an additional distinction: the TCA Achievement in Sustainability + Resilience Award. This new category was created to recognize projects that demonstrate significant efforts in sustainable and resilient design, encouraging broader consideration of these priorities across the industry. Companies may apply for the traditional Tilt-Up Achievement Award, the Sustainability + Resilience Award, or both. While the Achievement Awards celebrate innovation, architectural potential, and the advancement of tilt-up construction, the Sustainability + Resilience Award specifically highlights environmental stewardship and long-term performance.

Project Narratives: Sustainability + Resilience

Complete the following fields if applying for Achievement in Sustainability + Resilience
Embodied Carbon Reduction Compared to Project Baselines: Demonstrate how Embodied Carbon was reduced through smart design and/or material innovation. Material innovation could be demonstrated with the use of low carbon cements, supplementary cementitious materials, carbon capture, reusable materials, and other innovative construction techniques. Smart design could be demonstrated with a narrative explaining how composite tilt panel design saved material or studies demonstrating implementation of performance-based criteria. Examples of evidence could include software reports from EC3, tally, or other embodied carbon / life cycle analysis tools and/or EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) for concrete mixes and other products used on the project (steel, insulation, glass, etc). In the absence of EPDs, ready-mix designs can be submitted which demonstrate effort to reduce carbon footprint. Evidence of meeting a client’s specification or published goals, or evidence of meeting a firm goal can support this narrative. (500 words)

Waste Minimization and/or Diversion: Provide information on strategies implemented to minimize and reduce waste during construction, such as recycling or re-using materials. Provide evidence such as total waste generated per square foot, total percentage of construction waste diverted (not including ADC), and any innovative techniques (reusable formwork, etc.) (250 words)

Resilience/Durability: Provide information on strategies implemented which aid in resilience/durability concerns. Evidence could be in performance-based designs providing resilience against natural disasters or information demonstrating design aspects which enhance traditional service life. Sometimes resilience/durability and embodied carbon can be at odds. The judging panel is aware of this and will evaluate accordingly. (250 words)

Energy efficiency (Operational Carbon reduction): Provide information on energy efficient design and construction practices, including the use of energy efficient materials and systems. Energy efficiency is encompassed by holistic strategies (passive and/or active). Examples of passive strategies include building orientation and efficient building envelope. Examples of active strategies include efficient mechanical ventilation, incorporation of on-site or off-site renewables, and low carbon power purchase agreements. Metrics can include performance vs CBECS data, energy model reports, specification requirements, owner requirements. (250 words)
