    Founded in 1938, Stern Grove Festival is an admission-free summer performing arts festival in San Francisco. Now entering its 88th season, the Festival draws over 100,000 people during its ten-week series of world class performances in the outdoor setting of Sigmund Stern Grove. Past seasons have included performing artists from around the world, including The Flaming Lips, Bob Moses, Chaka Khan, San Francisco Symphony, Kool & the Gang, Los Lobos, Smokey Robinson, Ziggy Marley, Carlos Santana, Allen Stone, and Janelle Monae.

    Reporting Relationships
    The Assistant Perimeter Manager reports directly to the Perimeter Manager. When assigned, the following positions report to the Assistant Perimeter Manager: Perimeter Leaders and/or Staff. The Assistant Perimeter Manager provides direct administrative support to the Perimeter Manager and ancillary support to the Perimeter, Safety, Ticket Managers. In addition the Assistant Perimeter Manager works closely with the Administrative Staff, Production and Stage Manager, Seasonal Staff, Security and Medical teams, SFPD, and SFRPD Staff.

    Position Description

    Stern Grove Festival’s Assistant Perimeter Manager will assist the Perimeter Manager in overseeing weekly scheduling of staff as well as on-site, administrative operational needs with a focus on effectively managing time clock operations including confirming staff availability weekly, break scheduling, payroll reporting, radio and uniform distribution and return, and incident reporting. The Assistant Perimeter Manager will facilitate completion of all Area Leader Reports, incident reports, and any other production information into a daily operations report.

    The Assistant Perimeter Manager is required to assume the position of Perimeter Manager should the Perimeter Manager become incapacitated or unavailable.

    Standard Perimeter duties include helping with perimeter equipment set-up and strike, crowd control and patron services, emergency response protocol, and any additional duties that pertain to the smooth operational functionality of the venue.

    It is expected that this opportunity will be mutually beneficial to both parties and that the employees availability and commitment to work is upheld. Stern Grove Festival attempts to accurately estimate the amount of time required to perform these job duties and expects the employee to uphold their commitment to the working arrangement.

    Working Arrangement and Hours

    • Must be available every Sunday: May 18, 2025 - August 17, 2025 (except Memorial Day Weekend)
    • Must be available August 16th
    • 8 hours for the Leadership Symposium
    • Up to 16 weekly advance and onsite venue work from June - August

    Hybrid working style with 50% in office collaboration as mutually agreed upon. Working arrangement, hours per week, and compensation to be finalized in offer letter.

    General Duties

    • Serve as Perimeter Manager should Perimeter Manager become incapacitated or unavailable.
    • Manage time clock operations for all staff including daily iPad kiosk set-up and storage, assisting staff with clock in/out functions, generating real-time reports for managers, and ensuring staff verify working hours before departure
    • Provide Perimeter Manager with real-time staffing levels and identify and contact late/no show staff for formal reporting.
    • Schedule and coordinate breaks for Perimeter Staff and other staff on concert Sundays
    • Maintain daily equipment dispersal including radio and jacket distribution and return, and any equipment troubleshooting required.
    • Compile all completed leader reports, incident reports, and any other production information to be delivered to the Perimeter Manager by the end of the working day.
    • Assist Manager in management of daily set-up and strike of concert venues.
    • Ensure enforcement and compliance with all rules and regulations in the Grove, including maintaining clear aisle ways, smoking rules, restrictions on blanket size, unclaimed items, etc.
    • Help the Perimeter Manager train and manage staff to ensure high standards are held in regard to staff professionalism and performance.
    • Help Perimeter Manager empower staff to articulate and embody the Festival’s mission.


    Personal Characteristics

    • Ability to coordinate multiple schedules and duties in an organized and detailed fashion
    • Experience in scheduling staff paid and unpaid breaks while working to ensure staffing levels remain satisfactory.
    • Capable of identifying unexpected variations in standard procedures and ability to initialize effective communication between staff to stabilize the course of action.
    • Experience managing staff.
    • Excellent communication skills and collaborative work ethic.
    • Ability to handle stressful situations with diplomacy and tact.
    • Ability to judge any and all conditions and make quick decisions while adhering to SGFA guidelines.
    • Have a great sense of humor and maintain dedication to the SGFA mission.
    • Two (2) years front of Perimeter or Operations experience, preferably in a large outdoor venue.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to lift/carry 50lbs.
    • Assistant Perimeter Manager may experience periods of extended standing; employees must be able to remain on his or her feet in a stationary position.
    • Employees may be required to walk and climb considerable distances including on the hillside during the course of a work day.
    • Grasp, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects such as barricades, fencing, and carts.
    • Stooping, crouching and kneeling is needed to place signage throughout the Grove.
    • Listening and ability to speak is required. In a typical work day the employee will be interacting with large groups of people and they must have the ability to hear and clearly express their ideas with spoken words.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occasionally sound levels may exceed 100 db. All efforts will be made to protect employee’s hearing.
