Responsibilities of the Student Trustee:
The Student Trustee is the liaison between SGA and the Board of Trustees. This position requires great time, responsibility, and commitment. The student trustee is required to attend ALL Board of Trustees meetings and off campus events (i.e. conferences, state meetings, etc.) as the Rock Valley College student representative. The term of this position is from May-April.
Expectations of the Student Trustee:
● Attend ALL Board of Trustees’ meetings and submit a written and verbal report.
● Maintain business casual dress attire at each meeting and conduct yourself in a respectful, professional manner.
● Attend all Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) required meetings, functions, and events, including the ICCB Student Advisory Council.
● Meet monthly with the Vice President of Student Affairs for updates and guidance.
● Voice student opinions and issues to the Board of Trustees.
● Assist in coordinating SGA initiatives with the Administration.
● Assist the Executive Board in carrying out Student Government Association initiatives.
Illinois General Assembly Description of the Student Trustee: The nonvoting student member shall have all of the privileges of membership, including the right to make and second motions and to attend executive sessions, other than the right to vote. The nonvoting student member shall not be considered a member for the purpose of determining a quorum at any meeting of the board or any of its committees. No action of the board shall be invalidated by reason of any vacancies on the board, or by reason of any failure to select a nonvoting student member. (Source: P.A. 88-322.)
Student Trustee Candidate Qualifications:
• Be 18 years or older at the time of swearing in of this position (in May)
• Must be a resident of Illinois and the Rock Valley College District for at least one semester
• Must be a citizen of the United States
• May not be a member of a common school board
• Student must have successfully completed 9 credit hours and actively enrolled in a least 6 credit hours during their time of service (fall and spring semesters)
• Student must not have any Code of Conduct Violations
• Student must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher and be in good academic standing
• Student should have strong written and verbal communication skills
• All candidates must correctly complete all paperwork by the deadlines stated.
