• Make Tucson a Sanctuary City Petition!

  • In the first few months of this new administration, the country has been shaken with numerous executive orders and fundamental changes in government that infringe on the rights and wellbeing of every person residing in the United States.
    We, residents of Cuk ᚢon ("Tucson"), are demanding that our city government act to protect the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness for ALL their constituents and those that seek refuge from oppression.

    We demand that Mayor Romero, Manager Tim Thomure, and all City Council members to pass a resolution for Tucson to become a sanctuary city, acting to protect the rights of our citizens even in the face of federal retaliation. We hold the city government responsible for defending us from these federal attacks, and continued compliance to Trump's reign will be regarded as complicity to the violation of our civil rights. We expect transparency and open communication as legislation continues to evolve.

    OUR DEMANDS:

    No city resource or property shall be utilized for detaining persons for providing care or those seeking respite from discriminatory policies related (but not limited) to:

    IMMIGRANT RIGHTS
    - Keep ICE out of Tucson
    - Stop streamlining the processing of immigrant detainees and provide them proper due process

    INDIGENOUS RIGHTS
    - "Tucson" is built upon Indigenous land and this must continue to be acknowledged
    - Build sustainable relationships and provide reparations to support these communities

    TRANS RIGHTS
    - Do NOT prosecute providers that provide gender affirming healthcare or patients seeking gender affirming care
    - Do NOT enforce the policing of bodies in public spaces

    GAY RIGHTS
    - Continue recognition of gay marriage
    - Continue issuing marriage documents for LGBT+ couples

    REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
    - Do NOT prosecute providers that offer reproductive healthcare or patients seeking reproductive healthcare

    RIGHTS FOR OUR UNHOUSED NEIGHBORS
    - Stop the sweeps
    - Stop the persecution and regulation of mutual aid groups

    PROTESTOR'S RIGHTS
    - Protect the first amendment right to freedom of speech
    - Stop the surveillance and prosecution of protestors

    BIPOC RIGHTS
    - End the excessive policing, discrimination, and murder of BIPOC individuals

    EMPLOYEE AND UNION RIGHTS
    - Protection of government employees against mass lay-offs
    - Do NOT enforce the criminalization of strikes and the formation of unions

    RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
    - Support denominations that support and provide services for reproductive and LGBT+ rights

    ACADEMIC FREEDOM
    - Protect educators and the arts
    - Protect scientific ideals
    - Allow freedom of curriculum for public schools
    - Continue funding of public schools that choose not to comply with federal mandates
    - Allow for independence of school boards

    Lastly, although the following are not under the purview of the city of Tucson government, we demand you DO NOT COMPLY WITH:
    - Defunding of community spaces such as national parks, state parks, libraries, and community centers
    - Governmental lay offs
    - Anti-DEI measures
    - Regulations on curriculum
    - The rescinding of environmental legislation
    - Militarization of anti-immigration forces (e.g. ICE)
    - Federal silencing of dissenters
