Protect Privacy and Fairness in San Francisco Spas – Stop the Overreach

    Why This Matters:

The San Francisco Human Rights Commission is investigating traditional spas offering gender-specific services like Korean body scrubbing after protests from transgender activists. Some activists argue that policies designating certain days for biological women or maintaining sex-segregated spaces violate “inclusion,” despite the fact that these policies exist to ensure privacy, comfort, and cultural traditions.

These spas already accommodate mixed-gender days and allow trans women who have undergone bottom surgery to access female-designated spaces. Their policies are not exclusionary but rather respect the rights and dignity of all individuals—both biological women and transgender individuals.

Most concerning, one of the individuals demanding unrestricted access to female-only spaces is a registered sex offender with a rape conviction and a higher-than-average risk of reoffending, according to California’s Sex Offender Registry (meganslaw.ca.gov). This raises serious concerns about women’s safety in intimate spaces where nudity is involved.

San Francisco should not force small businesses to eliminate sex-based accommodations that many women, including those from immigrant communities, rely on for safety, cultural practices, and personal comfort. Unlike racial segregation, which imposed systemic inequality, sex-based distinctions in intimate settings serve a legitimate purpose of protecting privacy and dignity.
