Please use this form for requesting an assessment and opinion to be conducted by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) following an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) test.

A MRO (Medical Review Officer) assessment and verification report is usually requested after any non-negative AOD test result or workplace AOD concerns in personnel. It involves an MRO reviewing, auditing & verifying any lab results, clinically assessing the donor, and if indicated, speaking with their treatments providers to review any medical conditions or prescription medications.
A typical MRO assessment process is as follows:
- A referral is made requesting for a MRO assessment of a non-negative AOD test or workplace AOD concern - this is usually submitted as a management referral from the employer or manager of the personnel involved
- The MRO will review and validate any test results - this may involve contacting the administering testing service and/or testing laboratory
- The MRO will contact the donor to perform a clinical review and if applicable, contact the donor's treatment providers to review and validate any clinical information relevant to the case
- A MRO report will be produced with a MRO-verified outcome result and recommendations. This will be provided directly to the requester and/or entity commissioning the report
- The process of MRO verification and reporting usually takes around 2-3 days, depending on the availability to schedule a review with the donor and liaising with relevant parties
Please note - the scope for a MRO review is for independent verification and validation of an AOD outcome or concern. Whilst some recommendations are provided, it does not encompass a comprehensive fitness for work (FFW) assessment which is a more complex assessment and would need assessment of the personnel's role as well as other considerations such as the organisation's Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) policy. A formal MRO report is a legal document which, if required, may be presented in a legal setting. The associated costs of the MRO review are invoiced to the requester of the assessment.
