A collaborative offering between Abortion On Our Own Terms & Holistic Abortions
Class description:
Self-Managed Abortion (SMA) in Black Communities is a workshop created for Black folks by Black birthworkers to provide further education on a Black history of SMA in the U.S., share public and historical knowledge on the safe and supported uses of medication and herbal abortion, and discuss holistic experiences in the postpartum period of pregnancy release.
We will explore the legacy of Black midwives and self-determination through the use of SMA, the industrialization of reproductive healthcare, and the laws informing this history in the U.S. today. We will cover both herbal and medication abortion education to bring awareness to folks' options, things to consider when abortion planning, and the importance of sourcing. We will share possible experiences and what we envision for a fully supported SMA, inclusive of the postpartum period. Lastly, we will provide participants with a host of resources to support themselves and their communities in making informed decisions and taking charge of their reproductive lives and futures.
To encourage collaboration and solidarity, this will be an all-Black space!
Facilitated by Lo. Lo is a queer femme, full spectrum birthworker, and educator on unceded Catawba land (Charlotte, NC). She strives to preserve the Southern, earth-based traditions of organizing to improve the health outcomes of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color through their reproductive experiences. Since 2019, Lo has worked in the reproductive justice ecosystem to further birth justice, expand access to comprehensive sex education, improve competencies of reproductive healthcare workers, and build movement around self-managed abortion. As a student midwife, Lo hopes to continue the legacy of Black midwifery as community care while building power across the South and beyond.
