CA Legislature Seeks to Remove Transparency on New Taxes Logo
  • Tell CA Officials:

Don't Hide Tax Hikes from Voters

    BACKGROUND:

Californians already pay some of the highest taxes in the nation—on gas, income, sales, and property—especially once you factor in countless “special assessments” and fees. Yet legislators think we still aren't paying enough.

Now they want to make it even easier to raise taxes—by hiding key information from voters.

Assembly Bill 699 does exactly that.

Right now, local ballot measures that raise taxes must clearly state the tax rate, how long the tax will last, and how much money it will raise. This information is mailed directly to every voter.

AB 699 would gut that requirement—allowing this vital information to be buried in emails or hidden on government websites.

This isn’t about transparency. It’s about deception. The bill is backed by those who think tax hikes are easier to pass when voters don’t realize what they’re really paying for.

Make no mistake: AB 699 is designed to mislead the public and weaken voter protections.

It’s a cynical attempt to pass more taxes by keeping voters in the dark.

Tell your legislators: NO on AB 699. Don’t make it easier to fool voters!
