Founded in 1938, Stern Grove Festival is a free summer music festival in San Francisco. Now entering its 88th season, the Festival draws close to 100,000 people during its ten-week series of world class performances in the outdoor setting of Sigmund Stern Grove. Past seasons have included artists including The Flaming Lips, San Francisco Symphony, Kool & the Gang, Phil Lesh & Friends, Patti Smith, Los Lobos, Bob Moses, Smokey Robinson, Ziggy Marley, Carlos Santana, Allen Stone, and Janelle Monae.
Reporting Relationships
The Stagehand reports directly to the Production Manager. The stagehand works alongside Stern Grove staff, vendor staff, and tour personnel.
Position Description
The Stagehand will play an integral role in the smooth and timely operation of a large production of Sunday concerts. The Stagehand will work closely with other staff, stage vendors, and artists. The Stagehand will report directly to the Production Manager. The Stagehand will be in contact with all stage positions on the day of the show, and will need to represent Stern Grove Festival.
General Duties:
- Loading and unloading trucks.
- Assembly and disassembly of equipment on stage.
- Construction of set pieces, risers, musical equipment, as necessary
- Assist with video and sound production before, during and after shows.
- Move furniture, road cases, instruments, other miscellaneous equipment.
- Set-up of ancillary programs around the concert area on day of show
- Work alongside various vendors to assure quality and efficiency during setup, concert, and strike.
- Assist with the long-term storage of the Festival’s stage and equipment
Experience and Skills Required
- Experience working as a stagehand and working with various productions and artists
- Excellent knowledge of technical theater and music performance
- Excellent communication skills and collaborative work ethic
- Able to handle stressful situations with diplomacy and tact
- Maintain complete self-assurance and control of all situations
- Ability to judge any and all conditions and make quick decisions
- Hold a valid driver’s license
- General Knowledge of Sound, Video and Lighting equipment
Physical Requirements
- Able to lift/carry 70lbs
- Be comfortable working outdoors in the elements
- Ability to be on your feet a minimum of 8 hours
- Grasp, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects such as barricades, speakers, cases and musical equipment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occasionally sound levels may exceed 105 db. All efforts will be made to protect employee’s hearing.

Availability and Commitment
Stern Grove will take applications for anyone who can work any of the dates during the summer season. Dates include Saturdays (approx. 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM) and Sundays (approx. 7:00 AM – 6:30 PM) from June 1 - September 1.
Additional work days to be determined by mutual agreement for orientations and site preparations.
Hiring priority goes to staff who can work most or all of the dates. Concert and Orientation days subject to change or cancellation. We will inform you of any changes as soon as possible.
Compensation
Starting at $22.25 and commensurate with experience.
