CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:
Please note, we are devoted to diverse casting both in ethnicity and gender expression.
Age ranges: The stage ages are a rough guide. When casting roles the panel need to consider the relative ages of performers cast in those roles that require the audience to believe in particular relationships e.g. romantic partnerships, couples, family relationships and work roles. Therefore, your suitability for casting might depend on the ‘stage age’ of the person you are being cast opposite.
Lead Roles:
Sky Masterson, Male, Baritone B to Eb, Stage age 25-45: A high-stakes gambler whose luck never seems to run out, and a wild card who surprises himself when he falls in love with missionary Sarah Brown. Suave, smart, handsome. Some dance/movement ability required.
Sarah Brown, Female, Soprano to High A, 20-40: A pretty, bright-eyed woman who serves as Sergeant of the local Mission. Idealistic, sheltered, and straightlaced, she is passionate about her cause and wishes to convert the gambling sinners to saints. Falls unexpectedly in love with gambler Sky Masterson along the way.
Nathan Detroit, Male, Baritone to High F, Stage age 40-50: A good-hearted gambler and craps game organizer who could never hit the bigtime. He loves Adelaide, but cannot quit his gambling ways. A broke schemer with unwitting ways.
Miss Adelaide: This role has been cast.
Supporting Roles:
Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Male, Tenor High B flat, Stage age 30-50: Just like his name suggests, he is the nicest and cheeriest of the gambling crooks. High-spirited and a bit naïve, but sincere and genuine.
Benny Southstreet, Male, Baritone, Stage age 25-55: Nathan’s right-hand man and a gambler himself. Smart, slick, always moving and shaking, but with what he thinks are Nathan’s best interest at heart. Nathan’s loyal friend and lackey.
Arvide Abernathy, Male. Baritone, Stage age 60+ . Sarah’s grandfather and significant member of the Salvation Army mission. Wise, warm and caring. Sings ‘More I cannot wish you’ to Sarah.
Harry The Horse, Male, Stage age 35-55: A crook and gambler. He is a tough guy with dollar signs as his bottom line. Brings Big Jule into Nathan’s craps game and backs his cheating, but is also a man of his word in the gambling community.
Big Jule, Male, Stage age 35+: A big time craps player from Chicago who uses a gun and his own pair of rigged dice to bully his way into never losing. Powerful, intimidating, tough looking. A bit of an oaf.
Minor Roles:
Lt. Brannigan, Male, 40-55: A New York police officer who is on to Nathan’s illegal craps games and is dead-set on catching him. A tough, no-nonsense character.
Rusty Charlie: Male. Baritone. Stage age 20+. Cameo Sings the trio ‘Fugue for Tinhorns’ with Nicely & Benny.
General Matilda B. Cartwright: Female mezzo. Stage age 40+ cameo Regional representative of the Salvation Army. Powerful, matronly, no-nonsense with a formidable presence and, it transpires, a sense of humor.
Hot Box Girls: female. Stage age 16 – 35. Chorus We are looking for 8 females to make up this chorus of performers who back-up Adelaide in her nightclub act. Strong dancing, singing and character performance required. They perform 2 numbers with Adelaide. The Hot Box girls will also be in numerous acting scenes.
Male & female dancers: Featured male and female dancers will be required for the Opening, Havana Sequence and male dancers for the Crapshooters Dance. They will all double into the ensemble.
Ensemble: (male & female, various ages, should sing and dance well) The ensemble make up the characters of Times Square, gangsters and their molls, Salvation Army personnel and other cameos. We are looking for strong performers who can create individual, well-drawn characters.
Other very minor roles (including Joey Biltmore, Agatha, Angie the Ox, Liver Lips Louie, Waiter etc.) will be allocated at the discretion of the auditioning panel or at a later date by the director.
