  • What is the Southwest Open Art Exhibition?

    The Southwest Open Art Exhibition is a non-curated open-call annual exhibition showcasing the work of local artists from Swift Current and surrounding area. 

    Artists who enter the Southwest Open will have a mentorship opportunity with a professional artist or curator, sponsored by the Swift Current Arts Council. 

  • Please read this form carefully before submitting, as some guidelines may have changed. 

  • Who can submit?

    You must be: 

    • 18 years of age or older
    • a resident of Swift Current or surrounding area
      (within 150km of city limits)
  • What can I submit?

    • All original two- and three-dimensional artwork and craftwork is welcome.

    • Artwork must be NO larger than 48x48 inches.

    • All artworks and original craftworks must have been completed within the past three years.

    • Artwork that is submitted must NOT have been shown previously at Art Gallery of Swift Current or the West Wing Gallery.
      Please note: Artwork submitted to the Southwest Open cannot be entered into the Member's Show at the Main Gallery. 

    • Up to three artworks may be submitted per artist.
      Please note: Depending on the number of applicants, all three artworks may not be included in the Southwest Open.

    • Reproductions, copies, or work made from a commercial kit will NOT be accepted.

    • AI generated images will NOT be accepted.

    • All artwork submitted to Southwest Open must be ready for display.

    • The person submitting the artwork must be the creator of the work.

    • All work submitted must be suitable for an all-ages audience.
      Please remember: this exhibition is advertised as a family friendly event. AGSC reserves the right not to accept submitted artworks.

  • General Information: 

    • Artists submit artwork at their own risk. Artworks are handled to professional gallery standards.

    • Art Gallery of Swift Current carries appropriate artwork insurance.

    • West Wing Gallery will not promote the sale of artworks during the exhibition.

    • Artworks that are sold by the artist during the exhibition must remain in the Gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

    • This is a non-curated open-call exhibition. Artists who enter Southwest Open will not receive an artist’s fee.

    • Images of your art may be used for promotional purposes.

  • Dates to Remember: 

    • June 1, 2026: Deadline to submit your entry form and artwork information including your artist statement. No late submissions will be accepted.

    • June 6 - 13, 2026: Artwork must be delivered to AGSC (RC Dahl Centre - 411 Herbert Street East). Artwork will not be accepted after June 13, 2026.

    • Saturday July 18: Public Reception at 2:00 pm at the West Wing Gallery.

    • August 1: Last day for the public to view the exhibition.

    • Artwork Pickup Dates: TBA

    • July 18 and 19: Mentorship Sessions. Times TBA.

  • West Wing Hours of Operation: 

    Fridays and Saturdays: 1:00-5:00 pm

  • Artwork Delivery: 

    • June 6 – 13: Artworks can be delivered to the Art Gallery of Swift Current (RC Dahl Centre - 411 Herbert Street East) during hours of operation. (12:00-5:00 pm)
    • Artwork MUST be delivered no later than Saturday, June 13th. Late artworks will not be shown in the Southwest Open Art Exhibition.
    • No substitutions of artworks may be made after June 13th.
    • All artwork must arrive ready to be displayed.
    • Artwork MUST be on display for the entire duration of the Southwest Open exhibiton. 

    Artwork Dropoff:

    • Have your name, title of artwork, and year of completion labelled clearly on the back or bottom of your artwork. 

    Artwork Pickup:

    Pick up Dates TBA.

    ALL Artwork must be collected no later than August 30. We are not able to store abandoned artwork. Thank you for your cooperation.

    Late applications will not be accepted.

  • Artwork Information

    Please fill out the information as shown below for each piece of Artwork you are submitting. (Max 3 pieces)

     

  • Artist Statement:

    • Statements should be 100 words minimum, but no longer than 300 words maximum.
    • Statements should be written in third person. 
      Ex. Jane has been painting landscapes since she was very young, and has learned a lot over the years.
    • Minor edits may be made for length, grammar, spelling, etc. 
    • Statements will be typed, formatted, and displayed beside your artwork at the West Wing Gallery.

    Some questions to think about:

    • What inspires you to make artwork?
    • How long have you been making artwork?
    • What are your favourite materials to work with and why?
    • What do you want anyone looking at your artwork to know?
    • Why do you use the subject matter you've chosen?

     

  • When bringing your artwork to the gallery, please label the following on the back:

    • Your name
    • Title of artwork
    • Which is the top?
