RECAP. The City of Battle Creek has a separate sanitary sewer system and storm sewer system. The sanitary system (shown in green) gets treated at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The storm system (shown in red) flows untreated to the nearest river, stream, lake or pond.

See picture below of the City's GIS utility viewer. The red square (circled below) shows one of the many outfalls we have. Outfalls are where the stormwater flows into the river.

RECAP. Any discharge into a storm drain other than "rain or snowmelt" is considered an illicit discharge. This includes litter, pet waste and even yard debris. This violates section 6 of Chapter 1047 of the City's Code of Ordinances:

    RECAP. How can we help?

    • Report any suspicious activity to your supervisor. Snap a picture/video.
    • Clean up any spills and properly discard of kitty litter or absorbent material.
    • Use absorbent socks to block storm inlets when working near them to catch unwanted materials (liquids or solids) entering the system.
    • Keep grass clippings/yard debris out of the streets and away from storm inlets.
    • Report environmental emergencies to the 24-hour Pollution Emergency Alerting System (PEAS) Hotline at 800-292-4706.

Remember: Even though you may not live in Battle Creek, you have potential to impact our environment.

As shown in the map of the Kalamazoo River Watershed in the previous slide, all waterways are connected. What happens here affects Battle Creek and those downstream of us.

"Tug on anything in nature and you will find it connected to everything else."

    -John Muir
