Our Priorities
At Flu Lab, we believe we can dramatically change the human relationship to epidemic and pandemic influenza. Blocking influenza transmission is central to this change and will require layered and varied tools to identify, treat, and prevent infections.
Through grants and investments, Flu Lab funds approaches and interventions that will make this objective attainable, and our portfolio is both wide-ranging and risk-tolerant. We support organizations and leaders who share our urgency for new ideas and actionable results.
Flu Lab is open to receiving unsolicited requests for funding from both for-profit and non-profit organizations. We encourage you to propose promising approaches you think are most important and want to pursue. That said, we currently prioritize our resources toward programs that:
- Develop and evaluate new, safe, and effective medical countermeasures, including long-term prophylaxis approaches, therapeutic options, transmission-blocking influenza vaccines, and fast, accurate, and affordable multiplex or agnostic point-of-care and over-the-counter diagnostic platforms.
- Support models, methods, and ideas to enhance preclinical and clinical medical countermeasure evaluation.
- Provide passive measures to disrupt transmission, including interventions within the built environment.
We do not currently fund projects or programs focused on disease surveillance, forecasting, and tracking.
Information for Universities and Nonprofit Organizations
- Flu Lab does not fund sponsored research, but we do provide grants and gifts via a public charity grantmaking partner to universities and 501(c)3 organizations.
- We typically restrict indirect costs to no more than 15% of direct costs.
- The grantee owns the results of the research and/or project, we have no claims to intellectual property, we place no restrictions on publications, and we do not benefit from the results.
