Regulated restrictive practices are measures used only when necessary to keep a person safe when there is a serious risk of harm. The NDIS has strict rules to protect people’s rights and ensure these practices are used safely, respectfully, and as a last resort.
Types of Restrictive Practices:
- Seclusion – Keeping someone alone in a space they can’t leave.
- Physical Restraint – Holding or limiting movement.
- Mechanical Restraint – Using a device to restrict movement.
- Chemical Restraint – Using medication to control behavior.
- Environmental Restraint – Blocking access to spaces or items.
If a restrictive practice is needed, it must be part of a Behaviour Support Plan (BSP), approved, and regularly reviewed to ensure it’s necessary and reducing over time.
