  • 2025 Lee P. Washington Book Scholarship Application

    For Reid Temple members who have, due to unforeseen circumstances, needed to take a break in their undergraduate education and are returning to school to continue their path towards a bachelor's degree.
  • Eligibility

    The applicant must: 

    Be able to confirm active membership at Reid Temple for the immediate previous two (2) or more years.

    Be enrolled and/or accepted for enrollment in an institution.

    Submit a completed application for consideration by deadline. (No exceptions)

    Incomplete applications will not be processed.  Completed applications must include the following:

    1. Proof of membership at Reid Temple (membership envelope number on the application or certificate of membership).

    2. An official transcript.

    3. Two (2) letters of recommendation*

          a. One letter must be from a church/ministry leader.

          b. One letter should be from outside the church (school, community, career).

    *Please do not ask Pastor Mark Whitlock or Rev. Mia Whitlock for a letter of recommendation.

    4. An essay sharing your motivation to return to school and what you have learned during the break in your education that will help you attain your goals.

    5. A graduation or professional photograph.

    6. A letter of acceptance or proof of enrollment in the school you will be attending and the class schedule for the upcoming semester or quarter.

  • OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT AND ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION

    Please submit an official transcript. This should include the classes you have completed towards your degree, as well as the grades attained in those classes.

    Enrollment Verification

    Verification of your continued enrollment in an institution of higher learning is required.

    Please upload your class schedule for the upcoming year along with your verification of enrollment in the coming semester.

    RECOMMENDATIONS

    Please upload two letters of recommendation*:

    1) One letter from a Reid Temple ministry leader you have worked with (ministry leader, class leader or officer of Reid Temple (trustee or steward). 

    2) One letter from a school official (counselor, educator) or community organization (volunteer, fraternal groups, etc.).

    *Note – Please note that your letters of recommendation should be from an individual at your church and from your school/community who can speak to your character and potential. Your application will not be considered complete without both references. Please do not request your letter of recommendation from Pastor Whitlock or Rev. Mia Whitlock. Both letters should be addressed to the Reid Temple Scholarship Committee.

    ESSAY

    Please provide a 750-1,000 word essay sharing your motivation to return to school and what you have learned during your unanticipated break that will help you attain your goals. 

    *Note, as an applicant you should be authentic and truthful in your response and language. The committee wants to read your original thoughts and writing. 

    Applicants should consider the following when composing your essay:

    1. You fully answer the question and have a well written essay.

    2. Include details to ensure the reader understands your perspective/point of view.
