The world's largest collection of freeze-dried mushrooms, located in the heart of Croatia — Zagreb’s Main Square (Ban Josip Jelačić Square) — is at risk of being lost forever! This invaluable collection, created through decades of dedicated work by the Mycological Society "Kamilo Blagaić" under the initiative of Prof. Dr. Sc. Romano Božac, holds over 1600 specimens, including numerous protected and rare species.
This collection is an irreplaceable educational and scientific resource, offering the public, students, and researchers a unique opportunity to learn about fungi. Unlike other fungariums, this is the world’s largest display of real mushrooms open to the public, showcasing their original size, shape, and color in a way that cannot be experienced elsewhere.
The Problem
Despite its uniqueness, this extraordinary collection faces an uncertain future due to unresolved legal and administrative issues between city and state authorities. In December 2024, the Educational Center 'World of Mushrooms Prof. Dr. Sc. Romano Božac', established by the City of Zagreb, the Zagreb Tourist Board, and the Mycological Society 'Kamilo Blagaić' , was temporarily closed. Since then, display cases have been moved to a smaller space, and relocation plans are underway.
Relocating poses a serious risk to this collection. The fragile freeze-dried specimens are highly sensitive to temperature, humidity, and mechanical damage. Improper handling during transport could irreparably destroy decades of preservation efforts.
The responsible local institution has failed to regulate its status with the Ministry or propose an adequate solution for its protection. This is why the members of Mycological Society 'Kamilo Blagaić' took the initiative—to keep the collection intact and ensure its long-term preservation.
Why This Matters
Fungi play a critical role in ecosystems as decomposers, nutrient recyclers, and symbiotic partners supporting life in terrestrial habitats. They are essential for maintaining biodiversity, yet their hidden nature makes them difficult to study in the wild. This is precisely why this collection matters—it provides a unique opportunity to observe real mushroom forms as they appear in nature, thanks to lyophilization techniques developed by Prof. Dr. Sc. Božac.
With over 2.5 million estimated fungal species worldwide and only 10% scientifically described so far, collections like this are vital for future discoveries (The State of the World's Fungi Report, 2018). Losing this collection would create a permanent gap in mycological knowledge. Moreover, many fungi have potential applications in medicine, agronomy, ecology, sustainable fashion, and architecture, the full impact of which may never be realized if this collection is lost.
The collection’s location in Zagreb’s city center makes it a prime educational and tourist attraction, raising awareness about the hidden kingdom of fungi and popularization of mycology!
Our Demands
We call upon the resposible state and city institutions to take immediate action to protect this collection as a national and international heritage site. This collection is not just an educational center but also a tourist attraction that connects Croatia to international mycological societies, institutions, and environmental organizations. Its preservation is vital for current and future generations.
We demand:
- No Relocation: The fragile specimens must remain in their current location under proper conditions to protect the collection.
- Restoration of Premises: Both spaces previously used by the center must be returned to their original purpose.
- Educational Purpose: The collection must continue its mission of education and science popularization by reopening to the public as soon as possible.
- Proper Management: The Mycological Society "Kamilo Blagaić" should take over the management of the collection, as other parties have not demonstrated the necessary expertise or interest. This will prevent its deterioration and ensure ongoing efforts to refresh the collection by adding new specimens from nature and preserving them through lyophilization.
- Official Protection Status: The collection should receive legal protection as cultural and scientific heritage.
