CREATION OF SPOKANE REGION FILM OFFICE

We who have signed this petition want to express our strong support for establishing a Regional Film Office in Spokane City and County. The film, television, and commercial production industry has the potential to bring significant economic, cultural, and tourism benefits to our region. A dedicated office would serve as a key facilitator in realizing these opportunities.

While Spokane has a strong production history, with 45 feature films, three television series, several national advertising campaigns, an award-winning music video, a dozen unscripted and reality TV shows, and numerous regional and local commercials, many, even within our community, are unaware of this success. We have brought this work to our region through word of mouth, well-managed productions, and relationships established by a handful of local producers with Hollywood. We also can't ignore the growing, vibrant, and independent music video and short movie scene that has emerged over recent years and continues to produce content.

Spokane boasts diverse landscapes, historic architecture, and a vibrant urban setting, making it an attractive destination for production companies. A Film Office would actively market these assets, increasing Spokane's visibility as a prime location for filmmaking. An increase in film, television, and commercial production will provide significant economic benefits, including the employment of local film crews, other skilled artisans, and vendors and the rental of facilities and equipment. The office's promotion of Spokane-based production houses could also lead to future national and regional advertising work.

The benefits extend beyond the film industry itself. Local businesses such as restaurants, catering services, hotels, equipment rental companies, and transportation services would see increased demand as productions come to the area. Additionally, local retail stores and service providers could see increased traffic from the production needs, visiting film crews, and talent. The ripple effect of a thriving film industry can stimulate growth across multiple sectors, strengthening Spokane's overall economy.

A Regional Film Office would provide a centralized understanding of our local resources and needs that still need further development to increase the economic impact that this industry can bring to our region. Furthermore, a Film Office could be a vital liaison between the community and visiting productions. This office could also lead workforce development by fostering local talent and creating opportunities for education and training in film production. By partnering with local institutions such as Spokane Falls Community College, Eastern Washington University, and Gonzaga University, the Spokane Film Project and We F.E.W! can develop a sustainable creative economy that benefits residents and future generations.

We urge you to consider the immense advantages of establishing a Regional Film Office in Spokane. To take the necessary steps to make this initiative a reality, we encourage the Mayor, City Council members, and County Commissioners to meet with Visit Spokane to discuss the establishment of the Spokane Regional Film Office and explore ways of funding it. Our community can become a thriving film, television, and commercial production hub. With your leadership and support, we can ensure that our region reaps this growing industry's economic and cultural benefits.
