Hutt Street - Main Street Revitalisation Petition

To the City of Adelaide Council, the petitioners below call on the Council to support Option A or Option B for the Hutt Street—Main Street Revitalisation. The Council must fully consider the concerns of residents, businesses, and commuters before making any irreversible changes.We, the undersigned, hold the following concerns regarding the proposed redevelopment.Option B offers several benefits, including wider bicycle lanes that improve Hutt Street for cyclists, making non-compliant parking bays compliant, creating greater space for street furniture and outdoor dining, and allowing for a full footpath replacement which will significantly improve amenity. It also includes more vegetation and greening, while retaining the maximum amount of car parking.In contrast, other options reduce parking from 131 spaces to fewer than 52, which would severely impact local businesses, commuters, and residents. These options may increase congestion on surrounding streets, affecting emergency vehicle access and essential deliveries. The Frome Street Bikeway also remains unconnected to Hutt Road, missing an opportunity to provide safer and higher quality cycling infrastructure in the city.Business owners have raised serious concerns that losing customer access and foot traffic will impact their viability—especially as fewer parking spaces will discourage visitors, people with mobility issues, and regular patrons. This risks pushing businesses out of the city and harming Adelaide’s economic recovery at a time when businesses are already under significant cost pressures.Furthermore, the Council has failed to provide alternative transport solutions. There has been no meaningful investment in public transport or alternative mobility options before moving to restrict vehicle access. Before removing parking on Hutt Street, the Council and State Government must work together to offer reliable alternatives that do not disadvantage residents and businesses.We, the undersigned, support Option A or B as proposed on https://ouradelaide.sa.gov.au/hutt-street.
