MID-ATLANTIC MINISTRIES - SERVING BOTH CLASSES HUDSON AND HACKENSACK
Englewood Fund History
In 1969, the original gift in the form of the Property of Englewood Church was given with the stipulation that when it was sold it would be used for "the propagation of the gospel for those churches with critical needs" for Classis Hackensack ministries only. On March 7, 2016, Mid-Atlantic Ministries ("MAM") was approved by Classis Hackensack to become the designated steward and trustee of the Englewood Fund (the "Fund) and Evangelism Grant. There were no documents in the by files that noted when the church property was sold and for how much. The first mention of any money value of the fund was in the minutes of February 17, 1982 where it said: "Treasurer Damsma submitted his treasurer's report as of the end of January 1982. It showed a gross asset figure of $145,434.41." This we have taken to be the fund's original corpus donation. The guidelines also state, "Gifts shall be made from earned income only (interest) and shall ordinarily not exceed the amount of $1,000. Gift requests over $5,000 must have Classis Hackensack approval." When MAM received the books, the assets were at $194,855, despite records showing a previous balance in the amount of $242,000 prior to 2013.1 2
On March 6, 2018, Classis Hackensack voted and approved setting the new corpus donation at $192,000. These funds will be permanently restricted funds, and are now the new principal balance on which interest is accrued to be disbursed for the purpose of Evangelism (see page 2 to apply In order to meet more grant requests, MAM welcomes individual gifts and planned gifts, and has recommended that Classis make plans to continue adding to the Fund. Furthermore, Mid-Atlantic Ministries ("MAM"), sees the investment of the Englewood Fund as an opportunity to provide short-term loans in addition to Evangelism Grants to Christian Reformed Churches in the Classis. 3 The Englewood Loan Fund (the "Loan Fund") will begin in 2018 with the purpose of assisting Christian Reformed Churches with critical needs in Classis Hackensack for the purposes as described below (see pages 3-11 for details & to apply A distinctive feature of the Loan Fund will be its requirement that applicants form strategic partnerships with a preference of but not limited to CRC churches by means of (but not limited to) the co-signing of the approved loan. The Loan Fund is a revolving fund that requires all loans made from the fund be paid off over a 5 year period. 100% of available funds are available for lending each year. Any annual interest not disbursed as a grant will automatically be rolled into the permanently restricted fund and made solely available via the Loan Fund the next year.
2026 DEADLINE for Evangelism Grant applications is May 30th, with funds disbursed as early as June 15th. (Loan Fund applications are currently not being accepted due to MAM restructuring)
