What is a Chuck Wagon Derby?
A Chuck Wagon Derby is an event where a den pulls a “covered wagon” from station to station (“towns”) to take part in skills activities and games. The wagon can be as simple as a child’s wagon with an arched cover or as skilled as a wooden wagon with a cover.
Ideas for covered wagons can be found on-line.
Each scout and adult must bring a bag lunch to have on the trail with them. Parents should provide their scout(s) with extra snacks and beverages – the end of the event will be in mid-afternoon.
Each wagon will need to be supplied for some of the activities at the towns. A list of these supplies will follow. Note – the Sherriff or his deputies might check your wagon for the supplies on the list, so be sure that you have all of the items. The list will be published once the activities have been set.

Other Information
Check-in: In order to have a speedy check-in, please have a filled in den roster with you plus any additional registration fees.
Weather: We have not set a rain date. We will only postpone the event in the case of heavy weather. If the weather causes cancellation of the event on both days, then the event will be rescheduled at that time. If rain is in the forecast, please come prepared with rain gear.
Pets: No pets except for working aid dogs.
Absolutely no alcohol: Anyone violating this rule will be removed from camp by the park Rangers or Newburyport Police and will not be allowed back into the camp.
Smoking: BSA rules forbid the use of tobacco where any youth may see it. Adults should refrain from smoking during the event.
Buddy System: Every Cub Scout must have a buddy at all times, anywhere in camp. Remember two-deep leadership – only a parent may be a Scout’s buddy when only one adult is with a single Scout.
Parking: Parking will cost $5 per car with MA registration and the parking fee is to be paid by the car owner. It is recommended that packs use carpooling to keep costs down. Note: Cars with other than MA registration will be charged $20 for parking.
Water: Dens should bring water with them. We want to make sure that the Cubs stay hydrated.
Trash: Take trash out with you. Remember the Outdoor Code and leave the area cleaner than you found it.
Leadership: Keeping in mind that two-deep leadership is always required, the den should be under the control of the Den Leader and at least one other adult at all times. Any changes to the program will be given to the Den Leader.
First Aid: Each den should be prepared with first aid equipment and supplies.
Equipment: Each den shall furnish their own equipment and tools to be used. All dens will bring a “covered wagon” to the event with all of their equipment and lunches inside of it. Appropriate clothing for the conditions is mandatory.
Den Flags: Each den is requested to display a den flag, either as a banner or fastened to their chuck wagon for display.
Den Roster: Each den must submit a den roster upon checking in.
